Why temperature sets the real interval
This is the factor that overwhelms the others, and it is quantifiable.
Grease degrades chemically, and the rate roughly doubles for every 15 degrees Celsius above about 70. That relationship compounds fast.

The other factors
Each of these shortens the interval, and they are not additive so much as dominant.

A trailer that does 3,000 easy road miles and one boat launch does not get an easy interval. It gets the boat launch interval.
Damage does not average out. One immersion puts water inside, and it stays there however gentle the rest of the year was.
Why sitting still is not resting
The least intuitive part, and it catches trailer owners in particular.
Seals dry out and take a set when they are not worked. Any water already inside sits against the raceways for months instead of being displaced.

So a trailer used once a year needs annual service, and the mileage does not enter into it.
Condition based servicing
The better approach if you are willing to check rather than count.
Rather than waiting for an interval, inspect at a set point and decide from what you find. That converts a guess into an observation.
- Feel the hubs after a drive. Warm is normal, too hot to hold is not. Compare all four.
- Rock each wheel at twelve and six o’clock. Any knock means the adjustment or the bearing needs attention.
- Spin and listen for roughness or grinding.
- Look for thrown grease on the inside of the rim, which means the seal has gone.
- Pull one cap and look at the grease. Color and grit tell you most of what you need.

Adding versus replacing
A distinction worth making, because they are not the same job.
On a hub with a pressurized grease cap you can push grease in without dismantling. That replenishes volume and keeps outward pressure at the seal.
It removes no water, no debris and no degraded grease, and it shows you nothing. Topping up is maintenance between services, not a service.
A real service means strip, clean, inspect, repack and adjust. The inspection is arguably the most valuable part.
