- The decision only exists on pressed-in applications. On a bolt-on hub there is nothing to choose.

You have a noisy front corner on a car with a pressed-in bearing. The catalog offers a bearing for not much money. It also offers a complete knuckle, bearing already fitted, for several times that.
The cheap one looks obvious, so replace bearing or hub assembly looks settled. It usually is, right until it isn’t.
First, check whether you actually have a choice
Plenty of people agonize over this on a vehicle where the question does not apply.
If your hub bolts to the face of the knuckle, there is no decision. The bearing is sealed inside a unit that never comes apart, so you replace the whole thing.
The choice only appears when the bearing presses into a bore. Then you can press a new one into the knuckle you have, or fit a knuckle that already has one.

The pattern is worth noticing. The cheapest part carries the most labor and the most risk. The dearest part carries the least of both.
That inversion is why a shop quote for the expensive option is sometimes lower than you expect. They are not selling you a part. They are selling you an afternoon they can predict.
What actually decides it
One thing dominates, and it is the condition of the bore the bearing sits in.
A pressed-in bearing relies on roughly a thousandth of an inch of interference to stay put. That is a very small margin, and it does not survive much abuse.
If the old bearing seized and its outer race started turning inside the knuckle, that margin is gone. The bore has been machined oversize by the part that was supposed to be stationary in it.
Look at the bore once the old race is out. Circular scoring, a polished band, or a race that tapped out easily all mean the fit has gone. A new bearing pressed into that will move, run hot, and be back within months.
Corrosion does the same thing more slowly. On salted roads the bore pits, and cleaning it back to bright metal removes material along with the rust. The knuckle and spindle page covers what that surface has to do.
The problem nobody plans for
Here is the awkward truth about this decision. You usually cannot make it properly in advance.
The bore is hidden behind the bearing. Until the old one is out, you are guessing from mileage, climate and how long the noise ran.
So the car is on stands, the race is out, and the bore looks wrong. Now you need a part you did not order, and the car is immobile while it ships.
Before you start, find out what a complete knuckle costs and whether one exists for your vehicle. Five minutes of looking turns a bad surprise into a decision you already made. On some applications no complete assembly is offered at all.
When pressing the bearing is the right call
Most of the time, honestly. The default is not wrong.
It makes sense on a car that has never seen road salt, where the noise was caught early and the bore inspects clean.
It also makes sense when you have a press and are not paying for your own time. The labor gap drives the cost difference, so if the labor is free the math changes completely.
And on some vehicles there simply is no complete knuckle assembly offered, which settles it.
When the complete knuckle is worth it
Four situations tip it the other way.
- The old bearing spun. Not a judgment call. The bore is oversize and a new bearing has nothing to hold it.
- Heavy corrosion. Rust belt vehicles where the bore is pitted and the ball joint and tie rod are seized into the same casting anyway.
- You are paying shop labor twice. If pressing fails and the knuckle goes anyway, you pay to strip the corner again.
- No press access. Paying a shop to press a bearing into a knuckle you removed can cost more than the step up to a complete unit.
There is a fifth that is easy to miss. If the ball joint is integral to the knuckle and also worn, a complete assembly replaces two parts for one labor charge.
What about a used knuckle?
Reasonable in some cases and a false economy in others.
A used knuckle from a low mileage vehicle in a dry state can be perfectly sound, and for older or unusual cars it may be the only option.
The problem is that you are buying a bore you cannot inspect, from a vehicle whose history you do not know. If it came off a car scrapped after a front impact, the casting may be bent. You will find that out at the alignment rack.
If you go this route, inspect the bore before the bearing goes anywhere near it, and check the casting for the obvious signs of a hit.
A note on doing both sides
Once the corner is apart, the marginal cost of doing the other side is smaller than it looks, though it is not free.
There is no mechanical reason a bearing needs a matching partner. But both sides share the same age, mileage and road exposure, and the passenger side tends to fail first.
If you are paying shop labor and one side is already noisy, ask them to check the other while the wheels are off. That check costs nothing.
Common questions
Replace bearing or hub assembly: can you do just the bearing?
Not on a sealed bolt-on unit. It is pre-set at the factory with no serviceable interface. On a pressed-in design, replacing just the bearing is the intended repair.
How do I know if my knuckle is damaged?
Inspect the bore once the old race is out. Circular scoring, a bright polished band, or a race that came out with very little force all point to a lost interference fit.
Is a complete knuckle assembly worth the money?
It is when the bore is damaged, when corrosion is heavy, or when the labor would otherwise be paid twice. On a clean bore with press access, it usually is not.
What happens if I press a bearing into a damaged bore?
It will not be held properly. The outer race can creep or spin, which makes heat and wears the bore further. Repeat failures within a few thousand miles are the usual outcome.
Can a damaged knuckle bore be repaired?
Sometimes, with an oversize bearing or by knurling the bore. Both are compromises rather than a restored surface, and most shops replace the knuckle instead.
