Ask ten people to describe a failing wheel bearing and you get ten words. Humming, droning, growling, roaring, grinding, whining, rumbling, whirring. Some of them mean the same thing and some of them point at completely different problems.

Why it is a tone and not a thump
Start here, because it separates bearing noise from almost everything else that makes noise at road speed.
A defect on a tire or a warped brake rotor passes the same point once per wheel revolution. At 40 mph that is roughly eight times a second, slow enough that you hear individual beats. It comes across as a rhythmic thump you could count.
A bearing works differently. Each rolling element passes the damaged spot in turn, so a bearing with eight balls produces several impacts per revolution rather than one.
Bearing noise arrives many times faster than the wheel turns, so it fuses into a continuous tone. Tire and brake noise arrives once per revolution and stays countable. If you can pick out individual beats, look at the tire and the rotor before the bearing.
There is a detail here that vibration analysts use and it is worth knowing about. The impact rate is not a whole number multiple of wheel speed, because the rolling elements creep slightly as the cage carries them around.
That is why bearing noise sits at its own pitch rather than harmonizing neatly with anything else on the car. It is also why it cuts through other sounds so distinctly once you have learned to hear it.
The three stages, in order
Almost every bearing failure walks the same path. Where you are on it matters more than the exact word you use.

The hum is the one people ignore, and reasonably so. It is smooth, quiet, and easy to mistake for tire roar or a coarse road surface. It often disappears on rough tarmac and reappears on smooth blacktop.
The growl is when it stops being ambiguous. There is texture in it now, a roughness you can hear rather than just a pitch. This is the stage where most people finally book the car in.
The grinding is metal contacting metal with nothing between it. At this point heat is building fast, and the failure mode at the end of that road is the bearing seizing or the wheel going loose enough to matter.
The hum stage can last a year, the growl stage often runs a few months, and grinding can go from noticeable to serious in a couple of weeks. Each stage produces the debris and heat that accelerates the next one. How fast it has been changing tells you more than how long it has been noisy.
The other words people use
Four more descriptions come up constantly and they do not all mean the same thing.
Whine or whir. Higher pitched and smoother than a growl. Sometimes a rear bearing, but also the classic sound of a differential or transmission bearing, so if it changes with throttle rather than road speed look at the driveline.
Roar. Usually tires. A bearing roar is possible but tire roar is far more common, and it tends to change with road surface in a way bearings do not.
Rhythmic click or chirp. A single damaged spot on a race, striking once per pass. Distinct from the continuous tone, and often an early sign of a specific impact rather than general wear.
Clunk over bumps. Almost never a bearing, because clunks come from things with slack in them: suspension joints, links and bushings. A bearing that clunks is very far gone and will also be loose in your hands.
How the noise behaves tells you more than the noise
The character of the sound gives you a stage. What changes it gives you a diagnosis.
Bearing noise tracks road speed. Coast in neutral at 45 and it carries on unchanged while the engine drops to idle. That single test is covered in the diagnosis overview and it is worth doing before anything else.
It usually changes when you load the corner. Weight moves to the outside wheels in a turn, so a bearing gets louder on the side being loaded.
And it generally does not care about braking. A noise that appears only under braking is a brake problem, not a bearing.
A badly worn bearing with play can change note under braking, because clamping the rotor momentarily takes up the slack. That is a late stage signal rather than a subtle one, and it usually comes with other symptoms.
Front and rear sound different, and it is not the bearing
People often report that a rear bearing sounds vague and a front one sounds sharp. That is real, but it is about the path the sound takes rather than the part.
A front bearing is a few feet from your head, and the noise arrives through the firewall and up the steering column. It feels locatable.
A rear bearing comes up through the floor and the rear bulkhead, spreading out on the way. People describe it as a drone that seems to come from everywhere at once, and it is genuinely harder to place by ear.

When the sound changes suddenly
Gradual is normal. Sudden is worth paying attention to.
A bearing that had a steady hum and now has an intermittent rattle or a new pitch has usually had something break rather than wear. A cage fracture or a spalled section letting go both do this.
The same applies to a noise that disappears. That sounds like good news and occasionally is, but a bearing that goes quiet after being loud can mean debris has redistributed rather than the problem resolving.
Neither of these means stop the car immediately. Both mean the timeline just got shorter.
Ruling out the impostors
Before you conclude bearing, work through the things that sound like one. Tires are the big one, and cupped tread mimics a bearing growl closely enough to fool experienced people.
CV joints, brakes, differentials and even a dragging caliper all get blamed for bearing noise. Each has a tell, and telling them apart is worth twenty minutes before you order anything.
Once you are confident it is a bearing, the physical checks confirm which corner and how far gone it is.
A clunk is a different class of noise entirely, and why a bearing cannot really produce one is worth reading before you chase it.
