Why a wheel bearing squeak is so rare
High pitched noise comes from two surfaces gripping and releasing rapidly, which is what a brake pad does against a rotor.
Rolling elements do not stick and slip against their raceway. They roll, which produces a low frequency tone rather than a squeal.
Even a badly damaged bearing keeps that character. It gets louder and rougher, and eventually grinds, but it does not climb into a squeal.

A small spring steel tab on the pad touches the rotor when the friction material gets thin, producing a squeal that goes away when you brake.
That backwards behavior confuses people, and it is the single clearest sign the noise is brakes rather than bearing.
The test that settles it
- Get the noise happening at a steady speed on a quiet road.
- Touch the brake pedal lightly, just enough to load the pads without slowing much.
- Listen for a change. Brake noise responds immediately. Bearing noise does not.
- Then swerve gently side to side. Bearing noise changes with load, brake noise does not.

The genuine exception
A seal running dry against its shoulder can produce a light chirp or squeak, usually at low speed and often only when cold.
That is the seal, not the rolling elements. It matters because a seal running dry is a warning about lubrication.

Two reasons this misdiagnosis persists.
People use squeak loosely for any unwelcome noise, so a rising growl gets described as a squeak when it is nothing of the sort.
And brake and bearing noise come from the same corner of the car, so the location tells you nothing about which one it is.
A pad wear indicator means the brakes need attention soon, and that is not a lesser problem.
