The front is usually the corner you end up paying for. It carries the engine, it takes most of the braking load, and on a lot of cars it is also the harder one to get at.

Why the cheap part costs more to fit
A bolt-on hub comes off with three or four bolts and an axle nut. Flat rate guides give it 1 to 1.5 hours on a typical front-wheel-drive sedan.
A pressed-in bearing is a different job. The knuckle usually comes off the car, the old bearing gets pressed out and the new one pressed in. Published times run 2 to 4 hours depending on the vehicle.
At $140 an hour, that extra hour and a half to two and a half hours is $210 to $350 of labor. The part saved you maybe $50. Your front corner’s design matters roughly five times more than the brand you buy.

What the front part actually costs
Checked at one retailer in August 2026, so you can see the real spread rather than a range someone invented.
A common front hub assembly, part number 513188, lists at $70.79 for MOOG on closeout stock, $99.99 for the same MOOG part in regular inventory, and $106.99 for Timken.
A bare pressed-in front bearing is cheaper again. Timken 510063, which fits a mid 2000s Camry, is $34.79.
Pressed-in applications usually need a retaining clip, sold separately with its own part number. Most axle nuts are single use too, either staked or nylon insert. Neither is expensive, and both are irritating to discover late.
The thing that can double it
One risk sits on pressed-in front corners and nowhere else.
If the old bearing seized and its race spun inside the knuckle, the bore is machined oversize and the knuckle is finished. A new bearing pressed into that will not stay put.
You cannot see this until the old bearing is out, so the car is already apart when the price changes. A complete knuckle and hub adds $150 to $350 on top.

Front-wheel drive costs more than rear-wheel drive
Same corner, different job, and it is worth knowing which you have.
On a front-wheel-drive car the front bearing has a driveshaft through it. The axle nut comes off, the shaft separates from the hub, and after ten winters that can fight back.
On a rear-wheel-drive vehicle the front is a free spinning corner with nothing through the middle. Older ones use adjustable tapered sets, which book at 1.5 to 2 hours on cheap parts.

Doing it yourself, or paying only for the pressing
On a bolt-on front hub this is the strongest DIY case on the site. You pay $70 to $130 instead of $250 to $370. The tools are a socket set, a torque wrench and a breaker bar.
On a pressed-in front bearing it is much less clear cut. You need a press or an on-car kit, and a knuckle that comes off means separating ball joints and tie rods too.
Paying a shop to press a bearing into a knuckle you removed is a middle path. Price it before committing, because it sometimes costs enough to justify the full job.
Should you do both front corners?
There is no mechanical reason to. A bearing does not need a matched partner the way brake pads do.
The labor overlap is smaller than people assume. The two front corners share almost nothing, so doing both costs close to double rather than one and a half times.
It makes sense when the other side is already making noise, or on a high mileage car in a salt state where both corners have had identical lives.
Cupped tires make a nearly identical noise and are far more common. Rotating them settles it in one drive, for nothing. Ruling out the impostors beats spending $300.
How to sanity check a front quote
- Ask which design. Pressed-in or bolt-on. If the shop cannot say, that is informative on its own.
- Ask for the hours. A bolt-on front billed at three hours needs an explanation. A pressed-in one at three hours is normal.
- Ask about the knuckle. On a press-in job, what happens if the bore is damaged, and what does that add.
- Ask whether the clip and axle nut are included. Small money, but it tells you how carefully the quote was built.
