What legitimately adds hours
Four things add legitimately to wheel bearing labor cost. All should be stated in advance rather than appearing afterward.
- An alignment, on any job where the knuckle came off or a tie rod was separated. Usually a separate line.
- A seized or sheared fastener needing extraction. Some shops absorb this, some charge additional time.
- A damaged knuckle bore discovered mid job, which adds a part and its own fitting time.
- Both sides at once, which is close to double rather than one and a half times. The corners share almost no work.
Both are discovered with the car already apart, which is the worst possible moment to be negotiating.
Getting a figure in advance turns a surprise into a decision you already made.
How to audit an hours line
