Wheel bearing sizes work completely differently depending on what you are looking at. Knowing which system applies saves a lot of confusion.
One family is standard industrial parts identified by dimension. The other is vehicle specific assemblies identified by application. Mixing them is where trouble starts.
The three numbers
Every rolling bearing in the world is described by the same three dimensions.

Any two bearings sharing all three dimensions and the same internal design will physically interchange, whoever made them.
That is why a trailer bearing carries an industry number rather than a vehicle name, and why one part fits thousands of unrelated trailers.
Why car hubs do not work that way
A sealed hub unit is not a bearing, it is an assembly built around one.
Alongside the three bearing dimensions it has a bolt pattern, flange thickness, pilot diameter, stud length, mounting bolt spacing, and often an ABS encoder with a specific pole count.
Two hubs can contain identical bearings and still not interchange at all, because everything outside the bearing differs.
So car hubs are sold by vehicle rather than dimension. Matching them is a different exercise, covered on the vehicle identification page.
Measuring a bearing yourself
Genuinely useful on trailers, older vehicles and anything where the catalog has given up.
- Clean the part properly. Grease and rust both add to a measurement.
- Measure the bore across the inside of the inner ring, at its widest point.
- Measure the outside diameter across the outer ring, again at the widest point.
- Measure the width across the outer ring only, not including any protruding inner ring.
- Take each measurement twice, rotated ninety degrees, and use the larger figure.
The cone bore and the cup outside diameter are what you need. The assembled width is not a standard dimension because the two parts are separate.
Better still, read the numbers stamped on each piece. Cones and cups both carry their own identification.
The numbers stamped on the part
Faster and more reliable than measuring, when they are legible.
Industrial bearings carry a designation encoding the series and often the bore. Tapered sets carry separate cone and cup numbers.
Clean the surface and look on the outer race face, the cone edge and the seal shield. Marks are etched or stamped rather than printed.

Trailer sizes specifically
This is where dimensional thinking is most useful, because trailer bearings are standard parts.
Trailer spindle size follows axle capacity, and the bearings follow the spindle. A given rating usually means a specific pair of industry standard numbers.
The very common 3,500 pound axle typically uses an L44649 outer and an L68149 inner, each with its matching cup and a seal to suit.
Axle makers vary, and a previous owner may have changed an axle entirely. A chart tells you what is likely, not what is fitted.
Pull the dust cap and read the number stamped on the bearing you actually have. It takes five minutes and removes all the guesswork.

Dust cap and seal sizes
Two parts people measure separately and get wrong.
A dust cap is sized by the bore it presses into, which is the hub’s outer opening rather than anything to do with the bearing.
A seal has three numbers of its own: shaft diameter, bore diameter and width. The shaft figure normally matches the bearing bore, but the others follow the hub.
Both are cheap and both get replaced with the bearing, so measuring them at the same time saves a second trip.
What the numbers do not tell you

Two bearings with identical wheel bearing sizes can still differ in internal clearance, cage material, seal design, steel grade and load rating.
They fit the same space. They will not necessarily last as long or carry as much, which is why specification matters alongside size.
