Who actually takes bench work

Ask the right kind of shop

Machine shops, trailer and agricultural shops and older independents usually say yes to a knuckle on the counter.

National chains and dealers usually say no, because their pricing and liability systems assume a whole vehicle.

Phone ahead and use the word knuckle rather than wheel bearing. It sets the expectation correctly in one sentence.

What to hand over

  1. The knuckle, clean, with the hub flange already separated if you can.
  2. The new bearing in its box, unopened until they fit it.
  3. The new snap ring, if your design uses one.
  4. A note on which face the encoder is on, because fitting it backwards is the expensive error.
  5. Your phone number, since a seized inner race sometimes changes the plan.

The inner race often stays on the hub

Separating the hub flange from the bearing usually leaves the inner race stuck on the flange.

Getting it off needs a bearing separator or a careful cut, and a press shop may charge extra for it or hand it back.
