The inner race splits from the rest

Pressing a hub out of a bearing frequently pulls it through. The inner race stays behind on the hub flange, gripping with the same interference fit that held it originally.

It has to come off before a new bearing can go on. There is almost no room to get a tool behind it.

This is normal rather than a sign anything went wrong. It happens on the majority of pressed-in jobs.

How a wheel bearing separator works

Two hardened halves with a knife edge, bolted together around the shaft so the edges wedge in behind the race.

Once the separator has a purchase, a puller or press pushes against the hub end. The separator holds the race, and the two part.

Choosing one

Three things matter, and capacity is not the main one.

Jaw thickness at the edge. This is the whole tool. A thick edge cannot get behind a race that sits almost flush.

Size range. The jaws must close small enough to grip your race and open wide enough to fit over the hub.

Bolt quality. The clamping bolts take real load. Soft bolts stretch and the jaws lose their grip mid pull.

The cheap sets usually fail on edge thickness

A separator that cannot get behind the race is not a slower tool, it is a useless one.

If a set is otherwise adequate, the edges can be dressed thinner on a grinder, carefully and without overheating them.

The alternative, which is legitimate

Cutting the race off, and plenty of experienced people go straight to it.

  1. Cut a groove along the race with a grinder or a cutting wheel, stopping short of the hub.
  2. Do not cut through. Leave a thin remaining wall rather than reaching the hub surface.
  3. Split it with a chisel in the groove. The race is hardened and brittle, so it cracks and releases.
  4. Check the hub surface afterward for any nick from the cutting.

The hub surface under that race is a bearing seat. A groove cut into it means the new bearing has nothing correct to grip.

That turns a hub into scrap, which is why the technique is to weaken the race rather than cut through it.

Heat helps here as well, for the same reason it helps elsewhere. Warming the race expands it away from the hub.

Preventing the problem

Partly possible, and worth knowing.

Support the inner race properly during removal. It is then more likely to come out with the rest of the bearing.

In practice it stays behind often enough that planning for it is more useful than trying to avoid it.

When you do not need a wheel bearing separator

Worth saying, because plenty of people buy this tool without needing it.

Bolt-on hub units. Nothing is pressed, so nothing gets left behind. The whole assembly unbolts.

Serviceable tapered hubs. The cones lift out by hand. Only the cups are pressed, and they come out of the hub rather than off a shaft.
