The explanation nobody wants

If the noise changed character rather than disappearing, look at the installation.

A bearing driven in with a hammer and a socket takes shock straight through the rolling elements, denting the raceways. The part is finished before the car is back on the ground.

A damaged new bearing looks perfect

The dents are microscopic and sit inside a sealed unit. Nothing is visible from outside, and the part will be blamed rather than the fitting.

The noise usually appears immediately, or within the first few hundred miles. It tends to be harsher than the hum it replaced.

The cause people skip

Tires. Specifically, cupped or feathered tread, which leaves a wheel bearing still humming after a perfectly good repair.

Irregular tread wear produces a rhythmic hum that rises with speed, which is exactly the description of a failing bearing. It is more common than bearing failure, and it costs nothing to check.

  1. Run a palm across each tread in both directions. Smooth one way and sawtoothed the other means feathering.
  2. Look for scalloped dips around the shoulder blocks, evenly spaced.
  3. Swap front and rear if you can. If the noise moves with the tires, you have your answer.

Other things that hum

Several components produce a speed-linked drone and get mistaken for bearings routinely.

A differential or transfer case, which hums with vehicle speed but usually changes on throttle rather than on cornering.

An aggressive tread pattern, particularly all terrain tires, which drone constantly and are simply loud.

A dragging brake pad, which produces a light continuous scraping that follows wheel speed.

Where you stand with the shop

If the noise is identical, the shop replaced a part that was not faulty. Whether that is refundable depends on whether they diagnosed it or you asked for it specifically.

If the new part failed quickly, that is a warranty matter. Most part warranties cover the part and not the labor to fit it again.

Ask them to demonstrate the diagnosis

A shop that can show you which corner is noisy is worth returning to. Load transfer or listening at the hub both demonstrate it.

One that offers to replace the next corner and see is guessing with your money.
