When a vehicle stands, the corner load rests on a handful of rolling elements. They sit in one spot on the raceway.
Small movements let each loaded element rub microscopically back and forth in the same place, wiping away the lubricant film.
Metal touches metal in a tiny area under full static load, and material is worn away in evenly spaced patches.
The result is marks around the raceway at exactly the element spacing. It sounds like a rough bearing once the car moves again.

Grease separation
The second mechanism from sitting, and the quietest.
Grease is oil held in a thickener, a bit like oil held in a sponge. Left undisturbed for long enough, the oil bleeds out of the thickener and pools.
What remains where the bearing needs it is thickener with much less oil in it. The bearing then starts dry, before the grease redistributes.

Corrosion
The third, and the most likely from sitting outdoors or in a damp building.
Any moisture already inside the hub sits against the raceway rather than being carried around and driven off by heat.
Etching starts at those contact points. Once the surface is pitted, it behaves like any other raceway defect.

- Repack trailer bearings before storage, not after, so fresh grease sits in there rather than contaminated grease.
