Multi purpose grease in wheel bearings: what it is not

Start with the label itself, because that is where the confusion begins.

There is no test called multi purpose

Nothing requires a product labeled that way to meet any performance level. Two tubs both saying multi purpose can be quite different products.

The word usually means the maker believes it works in several places, which is a belief rather than a result.

The standard that does exist grades automotive greases in two families. Chassis greases get one letter, wheel bearing greases get another, and each family has performance levels within it.

Read the last row first. A chassis joint gets topped up whenever someone bothers, so a grease that slowly leaves is tolerable.

A wheel bearing gets one fill and has to keep it for the whole interval.

Mechanical stability is the quiet requirement

Hours of rotation work grease continuously. A formulation that softens under that shear ends up flung to the outside of the hub.

The bearing is then running on very little, and nothing about the tub warned you.

The specific products people ask about

White lithium spray or soft lithium grease. Usually too soft, often a low grade product intended for hinges and latches. Not a wheel bearing grease.

Lithium complex grease. A different thing entirely, and the mainstream wheel bearing thickener. Check the certification rather than the word lithium.

Moly grease. Designed for sliding contact, not rolling contact. It is a common wrong answer for wheel bearings.

General purpose EP grease. Load capacity is not the missing property here. Heat stability and shear stability are.

The reverse question

Wheel bearing grease does not belong on caliper guide pins

Guide pin boots are rubber, and a petroleum grease swells and destroys them. The pin then seizes and the pad wears unevenly.

Brake hardware calls for a silicone based lubricant instead, which is a different product for a different reason.

The same logic applies to constant velocity joints. They use their own grease because the motion and the boot material are different.

If it is already in there

Multi purpose grease already in a hub is not a panic, but it is not something to leave indefinitely either.

Check it at the next opportunity rather than assuming failure. Grease that has gone runny, dark, or separated is telling you it did not cope.
