The method for cleaning wheel bearings
- Scrape the bulk off first with a wooden or plastic tool, so the solvent is not doing all the work.
- Soak in solvent until the remaining grease softens, which can take a while on old hardened grease.
- Work the rollers gently by hand, turning the cage so solvent reaches behind every roller.
- Rinse in clean solvent, because the first bath is now carrying everything you removed.
- Dry completely, then inspect in good light before any grease goes on.
If you use compressed air at all, keep the pressure low and direct it along the bearing. Hold the races so nothing rotates.
Drying, which people rush
A clean bearing has no protection on it at all. Every surface is bare steel.
Left damp on a bench it can show surface rust within hours. A rusted raceway is finished before it ever turns.
The window between clean and protected should be minutes, not overnight.
If you have to stop, oil the bearing lightly and seal it in a bag. Leaving it exposed on the bench is the mistake.
Inspecting while it is clean
This is the only moment you will ever see the raceways properly, so use it.
Rotate each roller and look for flat spots, discoloration or pitting.
Look at the cage for cracks or distortion, which condemn the bearing on their own.
Check the cup in the hub, since a worn cup with new cones fails quickly.
