The seal does not fail gradually. It lifts, and grease goes wherever the path leads, which on a trailer is the brake drum.
Why technique matters more than the tool
Pressure is not a fixed property of the gun. It rises when the grease cannot move away.
A slow, even stroke lets pressure distribute through the chamber and the passage. A fast pump against a restriction spikes it.
Rotation opens a path through the bearing, so grease has somewhere to go and pressure stays low.

Choosing a grease gun for wheel bearings
Four things matter, and raw pressure is not one of them.
Lever or pistol. A lever gun gives more control per stroke and is easier to meter. A pistol grip is handier in tight spaces and produces less pressure, which is an advantage here.
Cartridge loading. Standard cartridges keep grease clean and make the type obvious months later. Bulk loading is cheaper and messier.
A flexible hose rather than a rigid tube, because reaching a fitting behind a wheel with a rigid pipe is unpleasant.
A locking coupler, which stays on the fitting and leaves both hands free to turn the wheel.
A powered gun delivers grease continuously, so the stopping point arrives faster than you expect.

Where a gun is not the answer
Two jobs a grease gun cannot do, whatever it costs.
Packing a bearing. Grease has to enter the space behind the rollers, and a gun pushed at the outside does not achieve that.
Replacing a repack. Adding grease dilutes what is in there. It does not remove water, metal or grease that has broken down.

Keeping the grease clean
A coupler left uncovered on a bench picks up grit, and the next connection pushes that grit into a bearing.
Wipe the fitting and the coupler before every connection. It is the cheapest contamination control available.

Using one without damage
- Wipe the fitting before the coupler touches it.
- Turn the wheel throughout, so grease has a path and pressure stays low.
- One slow stroke at a time, rather than fast repeated pumping.
- Stop at the first sign of clean grease arriving where it should.
- Never force a stalled gun, since a blockage means the pressure is going somewhere unintended.
