The short version
- The usual advice is wrong. Play at 12 and 6 does not mean ball joint.

- Noise settles it faster than any of this. A bearing hums with road speed, a ball joint does not.
Ask whether it is a ball joint or wheel bearing and you will be told to rock the wheel at twelve and six. Movement there means ball joint, movement at nine and three means tie rod.

Why the clock positions are not enough
Rocking the top and bottom of the tire loads the bearing across its axis, which is exactly the direction a worn bearing moves in.
So play there is genuine evidence that something is worn. It just does not tell you which of two parts it is.
The nine and three test is more reliable in the other direction, because that motion loads the steering rather than the bearing. Play there points at tie rod ends.
Ball joint or wheel bearing: the check that separates them
Have someone rock the wheel while you look at the knuckle and the hub with a light.
If the hub and rotor move while the knuckle stays still, the bearing is worn. If the knuckle itself shifts at its joint, that joint is worn.
This is the whole diagnosis. The direction of the rock tells you what you are loading, and watching the parts tells you what is giving way.

A hum that rises and falls with road speed is a bearing signature. Ball joints do not produce a continuous tone.

The dry park test, for the joint
Worth knowing because it isolates steering and suspension play without involving the bearing at all.
With the weight on the wheels, have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth a small amount while you watch the joints. Movement at a joint before the wheel starts to turn is play there.
A bearing contributes nothing to this test, which is precisely why it is useful.
Why they get replaced together
Reaching a pressed in bearing often means separating the lower ball joint anyway, so the extra part cost is most of the extra cost.
That is a reasonable decision when the joint is already marginal. It is not a reason to replace a good one.

The safety difference
A bearing that fails completely seizes or lets the hub wobble, which is serious and usually gives warning first.
A ball joint that fails lets the control arm and knuckle part company, and the wheel folds under the car with no warning at all.
