The rolling surface has broken up

A healthy bearing rolls on a hardened raceway with a film of oil between the surfaces. It hums because of tiny imperfections in that surface.

Grinding means the surface has spalled and pieces have come away, so the rollers are passing over craters and carrying debris with them.

Once metal is circulating, the damage accelerates. Each fragment makes more fragments.

Rule out the brakes first

Grinding is also the classic sound of brake pads worn through to their backing plate, and that is more common.

The difference is the pedal. Brake noise appears or changes sharply when you brake. The bearing continues unchanged.

The other giveaway is timing. Brakes usually arrive suddenly, where a bearing is the end of a long build up you have heard for months.

What not to do

Do not try to grease your way out of it

Grinding means material has already come away from the raceway. No lubricant restores a pitted surface.

Equally, do not wait for it to get worse to confirm the diagnosis. It will, and the extra damage falls on the knuckle.

  2. Check for play and heat at each corner once you are stopped.
  3. Identify the corner by loading it gently through a sweep.
  4. Stop driving it normally if there is heat or play alongside the noise.
