Bearing and CV Axle Together: Worth It?

Why a bearing and CV axle share so much work

The teardown is nearly identical up to a point

Both jobs need the wheel off, the axle nut off and the axle stub free of the hub splines.

From there the bearing goes one way and the axle goes the other, but the difficult shared part is behind you.

The remaining axle work is prying the inner joint out of the transmission and fitting the new one. That is short by comparison.

A split boot is the deciding evidence

A CV joint dies from grease loss and dirt ingress, not from mileage. A boot that has split is a joint on a clock.

Grease flung around the inside of the wheel arch is the same message from a few feet away.

Play in the joint, or a click on full lock under power, is the other clear signal.

Do not replace a healthy axle because it is out

Shared access makes a needed job cheaper. It does not make an unneeded job worthwhile.

A boot in good condition on a quiet joint means the axle goes back in.

The middle option

A boot kit, not a whole axle

If the boot has only just split and the grease is still clean, reboot the joint rather than replacing the axle.

Once the grease is gritty, the joint has already ingested dirt. The boot kit is then a waste of the labor.

Telling the noises apart first

These two parts fail with completely different signatures, which matters before you commit to either.

A bearing hums continuously with road speed. A CV joint clicks, and it clicks in proportion to steering angle rather than speed.
