Start with the wiring
The sensor lead runs from the hub up into the wheel well. It gets disturbed on every one of these jobs, which is why an ABS light after replacing a wheel bearing so often starts here.
It can be stretched while the knuckle hangs, or trapped when the hub is bolted back up. It can also be left out of its clips, so it rubs on a driveshaft.
- Follow the lead by hand from the sensor to its connector, feeling for flat spots or nicks.
- Check every clip is occupied. A lead hanging free will eventually chafe through.
- Unplug and reseat the connector, checking for corrosion or a spread terminal.
- Turn the wheel lock to lock and watch the lead. It should never go tight.
A light that comes and goes, or appears only over bumps or on lock, points at a connection rather than a component.
Encoder faults tend to be consistent, because the damage does not come and go.
The magnetic encoder
This is the part that catches people out, because it does not look like a sensor component at all.
Many modern hubs read wheel speed from a magnetized ring built into the bearing seal. It looks like a plain black rubber seal, and it carries alternating magnetic poles.
Magnetism. Laying the hub on a magnetic parts tray, or near one, can scramble the pole pattern permanently.
Contact. Wiping it with a rag full of grit, or scraping it, damages the surface it reads from.
Orientation. The encoder faces the sensor. A bearing fitted the wrong way round puts it on the far side, and the light comes on immediately.

How to tell an encoder fault from a wiring fault
Two checks, and neither needs special equipment beyond a basic scan tool.
Read live wheel speed data. With the car raised and that wheel spun by hand, a working setup reports a rising speed. A dead reading points at the sensor or encoder, and an erratic one at wiring.
Compare against the other side. Spin both and watch both channels. One reporting nothing while the other tracks cleanly isolates the corner immediately.

Clearing the light
Fixing the fault does not usually turn the light off by itself.
Most ABS modules latch the code and hold the warning until it is cleared deliberately. Some will self clear after several clean drive cycles, but many will not.
Clearing a code before fixing the cause hides the symptom for a few minutes. An ABS light after replacing a wheel bearing returns immediately if the fault is still live.
Do the repair, verify live wheel speed reads correctly, then clear. If it returns immediately, the fault is still present.
Disconnecting the battery is not a reliable method here. Many modules retain ABS faults through a power loss.
What else the light disables
Worth knowing, because people underestimate what is switched off.
An ABS fault normally takes traction control and stability control down with it, since both depend on the same wheel speed inputs. Some vehicles also disable hill hold and adaptive cruise.
Ordinary braking still works. What you lose is the electronic assistance, exactly when a slippery road would call for it.
