Where this matters and where it does not

An important limit before anyone buys a tool they do not need.

Serviceable tapered hubs. This is where a dial indicator earns its place, because you set the adjustment yourself and the target is a measured clearance.

Sealed hub units. There is no adjustment, and clearance is set at the factory. Measuring it tells you whether the bearing is worn, not whether you fitted it correctly.

On a sealed hub it is still a diagnostic

Measuring play on a sealed unit will not let you adjust anything. It does turn a subjective judgment into a number.

That is useful when a bearing is marginal and you want evidence rather than an impression.

Setting a dial indicator wheel bearing check up

  1. Raise and support the corner properly on stands, with the wheel off the ground.
  2. Mount the magnetic base on a solid, non-rotating surface such as the knuckle or a brake caliper bracket.
  3. Set the plunger against the hub face, parallel to the axle, not at an angle.
  4. Preload the plunger about halfway through its travel so it can read in both directions.
  5. Zero the dial with the hub pushed fully inward.

The plunger direction is the step most often got wrong. If it sits at an angle it reads a fraction of the real movement, and reads low.

Taking the reading

Push the hub in, note the reading, then pull it out and note it again. The difference is the end play.

Do it several times, and rotate the hub between attempts. A consistent figure across positions is a real measurement, and a varying one usually means the setup is moving.

Push and pull on the hub, not the tire

A tire flexes, and the sidewall movement swamps the reading you are trying to take.

With the wheel removed you are measuring the hub itself, which is the only thing that gives a trustworthy number.

What the reading tells you

Within spec, on a tapered hub. The adjustment is right. Fit the cotter pin and finish.

Too much play, on a tapered hub. Adjust the nut, which is on the repacking guide.

Zero play, on a tapered hub. Suspect preload rather than success. A slight play is the target, and a tight setting generates heat.

Any measurable play, on a sealed unit. That is wear, since the factory setting has no play to begin with.

Choosing a dial indicator

This is not a precision metrology purchase, and modest tools are adequate.

0.001 inch resolution is sufficient. Finer instruments exist and are unnecessary here.

A magnetic base with a locking arm matters more than the gauge itself, because a base that creeps ruins every reading.

Around one inch of travel covers anything you will meet on a wheel hub.

The base is the part worth spending on

An inexpensive gauge on a rigid base gives better readings than a good gauge on a flimsy one.

If your numbers wander between attempts, the base is the first suspect rather than the gauge.
