A purge is finite. Excess grease works its way out over the first few miles and then stops, and the amount is small.
A leak is continuous. If you clean it off and it comes back, a seal has failed and the hub is losing lubricant.
When a little is genuinely normal
A freshly repacked hub often pushes a small amount of grease out as everything warms and settles.
Heat expands the grease, and the cavity fill finds its own level. Any excess has to go somewhere.

If grease appeared after pumping through a fitting, the likely explanation is pressure lifting the inner seal rather than a normal purge.

When it is the inner seal
Grease behind the hub points inward, at the seal that separates the bearing from the brake.
Three things commonly cause it. The seal was old and hard, the seal was driven in crooked, or the hub was overfilled and pressure forced it past.
There is a fourth that people miss. A bearing with play lets the hub move slightly, and that movement works the seal lip against its shoulder until it stops sealing.

When it reaches the brakes
Brake shoes and pads are porous. Grease soaks in, and cleaning the surface does not remove what is below it.
Braking on that corner is reduced and unpredictable, which makes this a stop driving situation rather than a plan a weekend one.
The repair is the seal, the bearing if it has play, and new friction material on that corner. Cleaning and reusing contaminated shoes is a false economy that returns within weeks.
What the grease itself adds
While you are there, look at what came out rather than just wiping it away.
Milky or gray means water got in, so the seal has been failing for a while.
Very dark, thin or burnt smelling means heat, which points at overfilling or a failing bearing.
Gritty between finger and thumb means metal, and the bearing is finished regardless of the seal.
