High Speed Grease: The Number That Decides Whether You Need It

A 45 millimeter bore bearing at 1,500 rpm gives a speed factor of 67,500. The same bearing at 8,000 rpm gives 360,000, and that is a different lubrication problem.

The number that decides everything

That product is the speed factor, usually written as a DN value. A variant uses the mean of bore and outside diameter instead.

Grease data sheets publish a maximum speed factor, and it is the single most useful figure when speed is the concern.

Published limits range from around 150,000 at the low end to roughly a million for specialist products. That spread is far wider than most people expect from a shelf of similar looking tubs.

What goes wrong past the limit

The grease leaves the place it is needed

Centrifugal force at high speed throws grease outward. It ends up on the housing walls rather than in the rolling contact.

The bearing then has plenty of grease visible in the cavity and a raceway with very little on it, which is the worst combination.

The second failure is churning. A bearing forcing its way through too much grease at speed generates heat from the effort alone.

That heat thins the oil, weakens the film, and accelerates oxidation of the grease that remains.

Film thickness rises with speed as well as with viscosity. A fast bearing generates film from motion that a slow one cannot.

So the high speed answer is thinner oil, while the heavy slow load answer is thicker oil. They pull in opposite directions.

Whether this applies to a road car

Usually not, and the arithmetic shows why.

A typical car wheel bearing has a bore in the region of 40 millimeters and turns around 1,000 rpm at highway speed. That is a speed factor of roughly 40,000.

Ordinary wheel bearing grease is comfortable there with a large margin. Speed is not the constraint on a road vehicle.

Load and heat are the real road constraints

Cornering load, towing weight and sustained temperature are what consume a wheel bearing’s life on the road.

Buying a high speed grease for a passenger car is solving a problem the car does not have.

Where it does apply

Small diameter bearings turning fast, which is a specific and identifiable set.

Sustained high speed running, where the bearing never gets a cool down period.

Getting the fill right

  1. Calculate the speed factor first, from bore in millimeters and peak rpm.
  2. Compare it against the published limit on the grease data sheet.
  3. Reduce the cavity fill if the number is high, since churning is the main heat source.
  4. Do not compensate with more grease, which makes every high speed problem worse.
