Measuring the Knuckle Bore Before Fitting a Wheel Bearing

The short version

  • The bore holds the bearing with about one to two thousandths of interference. That is the entire grip.

  • You cannot see the difference. A bore two thousandths oversize looks identical to a good one.

Knuckle bore measurement is the step almost nobody does, and the one that decides whether a new bearing has any chance of staying put.

It matters because the tolerance involved is far below what an eye or a fingertip can resolve. It is also the first thing to look at while the corner is open.

An interference fit, and nothing else

The bearing outer diameter is very slightly larger than the bore. Pressing it in stretches the knuckle a fraction and squeezes the bearing a fraction.

That elastic squeeze is the grip. A retaining clip only sets depth and acts as a backstop.

The interference is typically one to two thousandths of an inch. Lose half of it and the fit is marginal. Lose all of it and the bearing turns in the bore.

How a knuckle bore goes oversize

Two routes, and they leave different evidence.

A spun race. The previous bearing lost its grip and rotated, machining the bore as it went. This leaves a polished, often scored surface and is the more common cause.

Corrosion removal. Oxide grew into the bore, then came away taking parent metal with it when cleaned. This leaves a pitted or matte surface.

A polished bore is a warning, not a good sign

People see a bright, smooth bore and take it as clean. On a knuckle that has just given up a failed bearing, polish usually means something rotated in there.

A healthy bore has a machined finish with visible tool marks, not a mirror.

What to measure the knuckle bore with

They are inexpensive and accurate enough once you have the feel, which takes a few attempts on a known bore.

The technique is to lock them slightly large, then rock them through the diameter until they pass through at the tightest point.

Taking the knuckle bore measurement

  1. Clean the bore first, back to bright metal, without removing any material.
  2. Measure at several depths, since wear is rarely even front to back.
  3. Measure at several angles at each depth, which reveals whether it has gone out of round.
  4. Compare against the new bearing, measured across its outer diameter with the same micrometer.
  5. Subtract. The bearing should be larger than the bore by one to two thousandths.

That last step is the whole exercise. You are not looking for an absolute number, you are looking for the difference.

The fit gets looser as the knuckle warms, because aluminum expands faster than steel. A borderline fit at room temperature can become no fit at operating temperature.

That is exactly the condition that lets a race start turning.

What to do about a failed bore

Three routes, and the middle one is more available than people expect.

A replacement knuckle, new or from a yard. The straightforward answer, and a yard knuckle is a legitimate use of a scrapyard.

Sleeving by a machine shop, where the bore is machined oversize and a steel sleeve fitted to restore the original size. Not universally available, but worth asking about.

Retaining compound as a last resort, and it is genuinely a last resort. It can rescue a very slightly loose fit but will not fix a bore that has been machined out.

Why it is worth the five minutes

Because the alternative is discovering it the expensive way.

A bearing fitted into an oversize bore does not fail immediately. It works for a while, then starts to turn, and by then it has enlarged the bore further.
