Inside is a spinning mass that repeatedly strikes an anvil. Each blow adds a little rotation to the fastener.
There is no measurement anywhere in that process. The rated figure on the tool is a peak under ideal conditions, not what arrives at the nut.
What actually reaches the fastener depends on air pressure or battery charge, hose length, and how long you hold the trigger. Socket mass, any extension fitted, joint stiffness and tool temperature all move it further.

The low end leaves the hub insufficiently clamped, which lets it move and destroys the bearing early.
The high end can crush the internal preload or stretch a single use nut past its design point, which is equally final.

Where an impact gun genuinely earns its place
Removal, and it is close to transformative there.
The axle nut. Often the single hardest fastener on the job. An impact gun removes it in seconds without needing to lock the hub against rotation.
Seized hub bolts. The rapid hammering is genuinely better than steady pressure at breaking corrosion loose, because it shocks the joint rather than loading it. That matters, because a snapped fastener is the most expensive way this job goes wrong.
Wheel nuts, for speed, though they still need a torque wrench going back on.
This is the real reason an impact gun works so well on removal. Each blow breaks a little of the corrosion bond rather than loading the fastener toward its yield point.
A breaker bar applies steady force, which is more likely to shear the fastener before it moves.
Choosing one for this job
Three things matter and one does not.
Breakaway torque, which is the removal figure and the one that counts here. Look for a genuine 800 Nm or more for stubborn axle nuts.
Half inch drive, since three eighths lacks the capacity for axle nuts on most vehicles.
Impact rated sockets, in black chrome moly rather than chrome vanadium. A chrome socket can shatter under impact, which is a genuine eye injury risk.
What does not matter is the tightening torque figure, because you should not be using it to tighten.
Cordless tools now reach output levels that were once air only, and they remove the compressor entirely.
Air remains cheaper per unit of output if you already have a compressor sized for it, which many home garages are not.
The compressor question
Worth a note, because it stops a lot of people who buy the gun first.
Air impact tools consume a substantial and continuous volume of air, not a brief burst. A small compressor sized for tire inflation and nail guns will run out and leave the tool underpowered.
That underpowered state is exactly where an impact gun becomes useless on the fastener you actually needed it for.
A workable approach
- Use the impact gun for everything coming off, including the axle nut and any seized bolts.
- Switch to a torque wrench for everything going on, without exception.
- Use impact rated sockets only, and inspect them for cracks.
- Fit a new axle nut where one is specified, since the old one is often single use.
- Never run an impact gun on a torque wrench, which destroys the mechanism.
