The short version
- Intermittent wheel bearing noise is the pattern that most often turns out not to be a bearing.

Trade diagnosis leans on a simple observation. Hub units do not really do intermittent, because the damage is on the races. Those races turn every revolution.

Why intermittent wheel bearing noise is suspicious
A spalled race passes under the rolling elements at a rate set by wheel speed. Nothing about that starts and stops.
It gets louder with load and speed, quieter without them. That is a gradual change rather than an on and off switch.

The exception worth knowing
Damage at one spot can make a noise audible only in a band, say between 40 and 55 mph. Above and below it, wind and tire noise bury it.
That looks intermittent from the driver’s seat and is completely repeatable once you know the speed.
The test is to drive the same road at the same speed twice. A speed window repeats exactly, and true intermittency does not.
Cold start noises and intermittent wheel bearing noise
Noise that shows up for the first mile on a cold morning and then disappears is usually not the bearing either.
Condensation on a rotor, stiff caliper grease and a cold tire all make first mile noise. So does frozen moisture in a shield.

Pinning it down
- Write down the conditions each time it happens, including speed, temperature and whether you were braking.
- Look for a repeat, because a repeating speed window is a bearing and randomness is not.
- Check the shields visually, then run a hand around inside the wheel for anything trapped.
- Feel each hub after a drive, since a dragging caliper or a dying bearing both show up as heat.
- Rock and spin each wheel, comparing sides rather than judging one in isolation.
A hub unit is one of the more expensive parts to guess at, and an intermittent noise is the weakest evidence there is.

When it stops being intermittent
A bearing that started as an occasional hum and is now constant has moved on a stage. That is a real progression and it deserves attention.
