Supporting the knuckle sounds like housekeeping and it is actually where several expensive mistakes happen. Nothing here takes more than a minute.

Why supporting the knuckle matters at all

The knuckle is heavy and it hangs on whatever is left

Once the bolts are out, the assembly is held only by the parts still attached to it.

Those parts are a rubber brake hose, a wiring harness and a constant velocity joint. None of them is a bracket.

A front knuckle with a hub and brake still on it is a substantial weight to hang on a hose.

A hose does not have to look damaged to be damaged. The internal reinforcement can strain with no visible damage. That shows up later as a soft pedal or a leak.

Hang the caliper from a wire hook or a bungee off the spring seat. There is no version of this that is worth skipping.

The rule that catches nearly everyone

Loose axle nut plus vehicle weight equals a damaged bearing

The axle nut clamps the bearing inner races together. That clamp is what makes the assembly rigid.

With the nut slack, letting the car down onto its tires puts the full corner load through an unclamped bearing.

So the sequence matters. Never roll the car and never lower it onto the wheel. Never let it settle on the tire while that nut is loose.

What to hang things from

The strut spring seat is the usual answer, and a coat hanger is a perfectly good tool.

A bungee cord across the spring works equally well and is faster.

For the knuckle itself, a jack stand or a block of wood underneath takes the weight off the axle.

Supporting the knuckle from the first bolt

  1. Hang the caliper first, before any other bolt comes out.
  2. Support the knuckle on a stand or block once it is loose.
  3. Free the ABS wire from its clips rather than letting it take strain.
  4. Keep the axle at its natural angle rather than pushing the knuckle outward.
  5. Torque the axle nut before the car touches the ground.
