Transmission or wheel bearing noise: the test that does it
Get the noise happening at a steady speed, then shift to neutral and coast. Road speed is unchanged, engine and gearbox load is not.
Noise that continues unchanged is turning with the wheels. Noise that drops away was tied to the driveline.
The second half is the reverse. Hold a steady speed and change up or down a gear. A transmission noise usually changes pitch, and a bearing does not notice.

A wheel bearing makes no noise at all when the car is not moving, because nothing is rotating.
A noise you can hear parked with the engine running is not a wheel bearing under any circumstances.

Why the confusion is reasonable
Two genuine reasons, not just carelessness.
Both noises rise in pitch with speed in normal driving, because in a fixed gear road speed and gearbox speed rise together. Only breaking that link separates them.
And front wheel drive puts the gearbox between the front wheels, so the noise appears to come from the same place as a front bearing.
The differential, which is a separate case
On a rear wheel drive car the differential produces its own hum, and that one does follow road speed.

Can a bad bearing hurt the transmission?
A wheel bearing supports the hub. It is not in the torque path between the gearbox and the road, so its condition does not load the transmission.
Even a rough bearing adds a trivial amount of drag against everything else the driveline is handling.
The one exception is a bearing that actually seizes, which is a wheel that stops turning rather than a transmission problem. What a failing bearing does damage is on the damage page.
A wheel bearing is a modest repair. A transmission rebuild is a different order of expense entirely.
Spending ten minutes on the neutral coast test before authorizing anything is time well spent.

- Listen while parked with the engine running, which rules the bearing out immediately if you hear it.
- Coast in neutral at the speed where the noise is clearest.
- Change gear at a constant speed and listen for a pitch change.
- Swerve gently side to side, which loads bearings and ignores gearboxes.
