It is also doing more work than it looks like it is doing.

What it actually does

On a serviceable tapered hub, the inner seal keeps grease in from behind. The cap closes the other end.

Without it the outer bearing sits open to the road. Water, grit and salt spray reach the rollers directly.

It is a seal, not a cover

A cap that is dented, loose or missing lets the outer bearing take everything the road throws at it.

That is why a missing cap so often turns up alongside a failed outer bearing, and why fitting a new one is not optional.

Getting it off without ruining it

Most caps are wrecked in the first thirty seconds of the job, by a screwdriver against the rim.

  1. Work around it, not at one point. Move a quarter turn between each small lever, so it comes out square.
  2. Use something wide. A cap removal tool or wide pliers spread the load instead of concentrating it.
  3. Grip the sides with large slip joint pliers and twist rather than pry. This is the method that most often preserves it.
  4. Never hammer a screwdriver into the crown. A punctured cap is scrap and the debris goes into the bearing.
  5. Expect to replace it anyway. They cost very little and a marginal one is a false economy.
A deformed cap will not seal

The seal comes from an interference fit around the full rim. Any flat spot or dent breaks that line of contact.

It may still stay on, which is the trap. It stays on and lets water past all season.

Sizing one correctly

Sizing a wheel bearing dust cap trips people up, because catalogs list them by dimension rather than by vehicle.

The number that matters is the outside diameter of the cap, which must match the bore in the hub it presses into.

Ratings are a guide and a previous owner may have changed a hub or an axle entirely.

Measure across the machined bore with calipers, or measure the old cap across its rim if it is undamaged.

Fitting the new one

Two rules, and both are about keeping it square.

Start it by hand and check it is sitting level all the way round before applying any force.

Tap around the rim, working in a circle, rather than driving it home from one side. A block of wood spreads the blow.

It should end flush or very slightly proud, seated evenly. A cap that went in crooked is already leaking.

The boat trailer problem

This is where an ordinary cap runs out of answers, and it deserves its own note.

Launching puts a hot hub into cold water. The air inside contracts as it cools, and that pulls a vacuum.

The vacuum draws water past the seals, however good they are. A plain cap cannot prevent it because the pressure difference is the mechanism.

A pressurized cap changes the physics

A spring loaded grease cap keeps a slight positive pressure inside the hub, so there is nothing pulling inward when it cools.

When to replace rather than refit

Replace the wheel bearing dust cap if there is any dent, flat spot, puncture or corrosion on the sealing rim.

Replace it if it went on loose, or came off without any resistance at all. Both mean the interference has gone.
