Wheel Bearing Temperature: What Is Normal

The short version

  • A working hub is warm. Roughly 85 to 135 F is ordinary, and 140 to 175 F is still within normal.
  • Above about 200 F at the hub face points at a bearing or lubrication problem.
  • The comparison matters more than the number. One corner well above the others is the real signal.
  • Disc brake hubs run hotter than drums, and unbraked trailer hubs run cooler than both.

Wheel bearing temperature is one of the few things you can measure yourself. An infrared thermometer is all it takes.

A hub too hot to touch is not automatically a fault. A hub that feels fine is not automatically healthy.

What normal wheel bearing temperature looks like

Those figures are for the outside of the hub, measured shortly after stopping. The bearing itself runs hotter than the surface you can reach.

Why the number alone is not the test

Compare across the axle

Ambient temperature, speed, load, brake drag and hill descents all move the reading. Tens of degrees, on a healthy car.

Both hubs on one axle share all of that. A large difference between them removes every variable at once.

A rough rule that works in practice: a 30 to 40 F gap between two hubs on one axle deserves attention. The absolute figures matter less.

What makes a hub run hot other than the bearing

Brakes are the usual answer

A dragging caliper, a seized slide pin or a sticking parking brake shoe all put heat into a hub. Far more than a worn bearing does.

Brake heat also reaches the hub through the rotor. A hot rotor therefore points at brakes rather than bearings.

The other common cause on trailers is an overtightened spindle nut, which preloads the bearing and generates heat directly.

Why wheel bearing temperature matters at all

Heat is what ends the grease

Grease life falls sharply with temperature, roughly halving for every 15 C above about 70 C.

So a hub running consistently hot is not only telling you something is wrong now. It is shortening what is left.

Measuring it properly

  1. Drive normally first, at least fifteen minutes, then stop.
  2. Measure the hub face, not the rotor and not the wheel.
  3. Take all four, quickly, before anything cools.
  4. Compare across each axle rather than against a target figure.
  5. Repeat after a longer run if one corner looks marginal.

A cool hub does not clear a bearing

Plenty of worn bearings run at a completely normal temperature. Heat comes from drag, and a rough bearing may not drag much.

Temperature is one input. It confirms an urgent problem rather than ruling one out.
