Removing a knuckle usually means separating the lower ball joint, the tie rod end, and often the strut bolts.

Strut to knuckle bolts frequently sit in slotted holes, and those slots are the camber adjustment on many cars.

How the job goes without removing the knuckle

A threaded rod passes through the bearing, with cups and plates either side. Turning the nut draws the bearing out, then draws the new one in.

It is the same principle as a shop press, applied through a bolt instead of a ram.

Where working without removing the knuckle succeeds

Access decides it, not the vehicle brand

The kit needs room to sit square against both faces of the knuckle, with the strut, driveshaft and steering arm all in the way.

Some corners have generous room and the job goes quickly. Others leave no space to get the plates flat, and the tool fights you.

Try to fit the kit before committing. If the plates will not sit flat and square, the tool will pull the bearing in crooked.

The part that is genuinely worse on the car

You cannot inspect the bore properly

With the knuckle on the bench you can see the bearing seat, clean it back to bright metal and measure it.

On the car you are working blind into a hole, and an oversize or corroded bore is exactly what ruins the new bearing.

If the old bearing spun in its housing, take the knuckle off. There is no way to assess that damage in place.

When taking it off is the faster answer

Three situations where the on car route costs more time than it saves.

Heavy corrosion. A bearing that will not move under screw force in a confined space moves readily under a press with heat available.

A spun race. The bore needs assessing, and possibly the knuckle needs replacing.

Suspension work already planned. If a ball joint or strut is coming off anyway, the alignment argument disappears.

Doing it on the car properly

  1. Dry fit the kit first, before committing to the job, to confirm it sits square.
  2. Remove the driveshaft or push it clear, since the rod has to pass through.
  3. Clean what you can reach in the bore, with the old bearing out.
  4. Press on the outer race only going in, which the correct cup in the kit handles.
  5. Check it is entering square after the first movement, not at the end.
