What manual locking hubs actually do
Locked, the hub clamps the axle shaft to the wheel so the front axle drives. Unlocked, the wheel turns freely and the shaft stays still.
The wheel bearings themselves turn either way, every mile you drive. They do not get a rest when you unlock.
That is the misconception worth clearing first. Unlocking saves driveline drag and wear, not bearing life.

That last row catches people. The locking hub carries a small bearing of its own, and it spins whenever the hub is unlocked.
It can be worn while the main bearings are perfect. It makes a noise that follows road speed just like they do.
Adjustment, which is the whole skill
Seat the bearings under load while rotating the hub. Then back the nut off and set a small measurable end play.
Roughly 0.003 to 0.010 inch is the usual target. Torquing the nut down hard preloads the bearings and cooks them.

A sealed hub on a modern car takes a large clamping torque because the bearing is preset inside the cartridge.
A tapered set on a spindle is the opposite. The nut sets the clearance directly, and a big number destroys it.

Take the opportunity. Clean, inspect, repack and fit a new inner seal, then adjust.

- Undo the lock and adjusting nut, noting how the lock ring indexes.
- Clean and inspect both bearings and races before deciding anything.
