Stuck ABS Sensor: Getting It Out Intact

The short version

  • The sensor is corroded into its bore, not bolted in tight. One small bolt holds it.

A stuck ABS sensor is the small part that ruins the schedule on a bearing job. It costs almost nothing and it can add two hours.

It is also entirely avoidable, because the way most of them break is the way most people try to remove them.

Why you get a stuck ABS sensor

The sensor sits in a machined hole in the knuckle, in the wettest, saltiest, hottest place on the car.

Aluminum oxide grows in the gap and takes up more room than the metal it replaced. The sensor is squeezed, not gripped.

So the retaining bolt comes out easily and the sensor still will not move. That is normal, and it is not a sign you missed a fastener.

Getting a stuck ABS sensor out intact

A corroded joint is strong in tension and weak in shear. Twisting breaks the bond along its weakest direction.

Pull hard instead and the thin plastic body separates from the tip, which stays in the bore.

Grip the body with pliers only if the sensor is being replaced anyway, since the jaws mark it.

When it snaps anyway

The stub can usually be retrieved

Drill a small pilot into the remains, thread a self tapping screw into it, then pull on the screw with a slide hammer or locking pliers.

Heat around the bore first helps considerably, because aluminum expands faster than the steel sleeve inside it.

The last resort is driving it out from behind, which usually means the hub has to come off. On a bearing job it is coming off anyway.

Clean the bore before the new sensor goes in

Leftover corrosion holds the new sensor proud of its seat, which widens the air gap to the encoder.

A wide gap produces an intermittent signal at low speed, which is an ABS light that comes and goes.

A small round wire brush or a twist of emery cloth is enough. The sensor must seat fully against its shoulder.

Doing it in order

  1. Soak the base early, before you start any other part of the job.
  2. Remove the retaining bolt and expect the sensor still to be stuck.
  3. Twist rather than pull, working it back and forth.
  4. Add heat to the knuckle around the bore if it resists.
  5. Clean the bore so the new sensor seats fully.

Common questions

Why is my ABS sensor stuck when the bolt is out?

Corrosion in the bore has swollen and gripped it. The bolt only locates it, so removing the bolt changes nothing.

How do I get a stuck ABS sensor out without breaking it?

Twist it back and forth rather than pulling. A corroded joint is weak in shear and strong in tension.

It snapped and the tip is still in there. Now what?

Drill a pilot, thread in a self tapping screw and pull on that with a slide hammer. Heat around the bore helps.

Can I leave the broken piece in place?

No. The new sensor cannot seat, and the air gap will be wrong even if it goes in at all.

Does the sensor need replacing anyway?

Not always, but if it fought you, it is worth fitting a new one while everything is open.

Why did the ABS light come on after the job?

Most often a wiring pinch or a disturbed encoder rather than the sensor, though a poorly seated sensor does it too.

Should I grease the new sensor before fitting?

A trace of silicone grease on the body helps it come out next time. Keep it off the sensing face.
