Why rear wheel bearing symptoms feel different
A failing front bearing sends vibration up the knuckle, through the steering arm and into your hands. A rear one has no path to the wheel in your hands.
What reaches you instead is a low drone through the floor and the seat base, which is easy to mistake for tires or exhaust.

Why the weave test underperforms
Weaving works up front because turning loads the outside wheel heavily and unloads the inside one.
At the rear the same maneuver produces a much smaller weight shift. A rear bearing may change volume slightly or not at all.
A clear change still means something. An absent change does not clear the rear.

The neutral coast test
Get the noise happening, then shift to neutral and coast at the same speed. The wheels keep turning, so a bearing keeps humming.
A differential or pinion noise depends on torque through the gears, so it changes or fades when you take the load off.
Do the same thing under gentle acceleration and again on a trailing throttle. Gear noise usually shifts between the two, and a bearing does not.

The brake test that only works at the rear
On a rear drum axle, the shoes press outward against the drum and take part of the load off the bearing.
So a rear bearing noise that quiets under light, steady braking is a strong signal. A front bearing usually gets louder instead.
Use very light pressure at a constant speed. Hard braking transfers weight forward and confuses the result.

What rear wheel bearing symptoms look like at a standstill
- Raise one rear wheel with the car safely supported and the parking brake released.
- Rock it at twelve and six, feeling for movement rather than looking for it.
- Spin it by hand and listen close to the hub for roughness or a gritty catch.
- Repeat on the other side, because the comparison tells you more than either result alone.
- Check hub temperature after a drive, since one hot rear corner is meaningful.
Hand speed is a fraction of road speed and carries none of the car’s weight. Plenty of bad bearings feel fine on a jack.
Treat a clean bench check as weak evidence, never as an all clear.

What is different about the repair
Rear bearings are often the easier job. Many rear wheel drive and front wheel drive cars use a bolt on hub with four bolts and no press work.
Others use a pressed bearing in a drum or a solid axle that has to come out. The design decides the bill more than the axle does.
