Warped Rotor or Wheel Bearing? Measure Before You Guess

Pedal pulsation gets called a warped rotor almost automatically. The word warped implies heat bent the disc, and that is not usually what happened.

What usually happened is that the disc has been running very slightly off square, and the pads wore it thin in one place. The hub behind it is a common reason why.

Thickness variation, not a bend

A disc turning slightly off square touches its pads more on one side each revolution. Over thousands of miles that grinds away a few ten thousandths in one band.

The caliper piston then has to move in and out once per revolution, and you feel that in the pedal.

The trade term is disc thickness variation. It is caused by runout, and runout has causes behind it.

Where a bearing comes in

The rotor inherits the hub’s error

The rotor bolts to the hub flange, so anything wrong with that flange is passed straight to the braking surface and magnified by the larger radius.

A hub flange running half a thousandth out can produce roughly twice that at the friction face.

Add measurable bearing play and the rotor also tilts in the caliper whenever the car takes a side load. That produces a pulsation that comes and goes rather than one that is always there.

Telling them apart

  1. Note when you feel it. Pulsation only under braking points at the disc, and noise without braking points elsewhere.
  2. Check for play at twelve and six with the wheel raised, before touching the brakes.
  3. Measure runout on the car, with the rotor clamped down as it will run.
  4. Measure the bare hub flange once the rotor is off, since that separates the two parts.
  5. Clean the mating faces, because rust between hub and rotor causes runout all on its own.
A steering shake is not the same complaint

Shake in the steering wheel that happens at a steady speed without braking is a balance, tire or bearing issue.

Pulsation that appears only when the pedal is down is a brake surface issue. Do not treat them as one symptom.

Can a bad bearing ruin new rotors

Yes, and quickly. If the hub is running out or the bearing has play, a fresh rotor starts wearing unevenly from the first stop.

Owners often replace rotors twice before anyone measures the hub. The second set fails the same way for the same reason.

Fix the hub before the disc

If the bearing has play or the flange runs out, that is the cause. New rotors on a bad hub buy months at best.

If the hub measures clean and only the rotor is out, then the rotor alone is the job.
