Those mileage figures are three times apart. That is worth knowing rather than averaging, and both do agree on the yearly part.

Why RV wheel bearings care about time

Sitting is not resting

Grease separates while parked. The oil migrates away from the thickener and pools low in the hub.

Condensation cycles through the hub as temperatures swing. Moisture then settles on races that never turn.

Park a loaded trailer on one spot for six months and the rolling elements press the same patch of race the whole time.

What EZ Lube does and does not do

It pushes grease through, it does not inspect

A hollow spindle carries grease from a fitting at the end out to the inner bearing. Fresh grease pushes the old grease outward.

It cannot tell you that a race is pitted, that a seal lip is gone or that water has already been in there.

Pump it too fast and the pressure blows the inner seal, which puts grease on the brakes. Turn the wheel while pumping and go slowly.

Weight is the other half of the story

A loaded travel trailer runs its bearings much closer to their rating than a car does. Bearing life falls steeply with load, not in proportion to it.

So a trailer loaded near its rating and one loaded halfway do not differ slightly in bearing life. They differ a lot.

Tandem axles help, provided the load sits between them. A nose heavy or tail heavy trailer overloads one axle while the other coasts.

Doing the annual service

  1. Pull each hub rather than relying on a grease fitting.
  2. Clean everything off, including the spindle, and inspect the races in good light.
  3. Replace every seal, since they cost little and are the reason you are here.
  4. Pack by hand until grease comes through the wide face of each bearing.
  5. Set the adjustment properly, seating under rotation and then backing off to a small end play.
Do not torque a trailer nut like a car nut

A trailer spindle nut sets bearing clearance. A large torque figure taken from a car crushes the bearing and generates heat immediately.

Seat, back off, and leave a small measurable end play.

Before a long trip

Rock each wheel at twelve and six, spin it and listen, and check that no grease has been thrown onto the inside of a rim.

Then check hub temperatures at the first fuel stop and compare them across the trailer. One hot hub is the warning worth acting on.
