The short version

  • On a four wheel drive Ranger, the connector shape decides the part more than the model year does.
  • Round connector takes 515052 and square connector takes 515129. The changeover happens partway through the 2009 model year.
  • Two wheel drive trucks used a different bearing set for the whole run, not the connector parts above.
  • Nothing was sold new in North America for 2012 to 2018. The 2019 truck is a new body the catalogs on hand do not cover yet.

Few pages on this site cover as many separate eras as this one. A Ranger wheel bearing means something different depending on drivetrain and model year. It can even depend on the exact month a 2009 truck left the factory.

This page runs from 1988 to 2019. That spans three distinct front bearing designs and a solid rear axle throughout. It also spans a seven year stretch where the truck was not sold here at all.

The connector split

Two parts inside one model year

On four wheel drive trucks, the front hub changed during 2009. Before the changeover it takes a round connector part, and after it a square connector one.

The commonly cited numbers are 515052 with the round connector and 515129 with the square one.

These connector rows, and the plain 2003 to 2008 row alongside them, describe four wheel drive trucks only. A two wheel drive Ranger from the same years used a different part family, covered further down this page.

Pull the old hub’s plug and look at it before ordering. Lookups run through the cross reference page.

Neither number is right or wrong on its own. The build date on the truck decides which one belongs there.

What the 4×4 front actually is

Two eras, not one

From 1998 the four wheel drive front is a sealed hub assembly. It carries the bearing, the flange and often the wheel speed sensor together. It bolts on complete, with no press work involved.

Before 1998 the four wheel drive front used a serviceable tapered bearing set instead. It was packed and adjusted rather than replaced as one sealed unit.

The 1998 to 2002 trucks add real complexity of their own.

National’s catalog splits those years by how many wheels carry ABS. The 2000 model year carries a further split by hub lock design. It separates the earlier pulse vacuum hub locks from the redesign that replaced them mid year.

A second catalog, Timken, lists its own cross number for the ABS equipped 2000 to 2002 trucks. That is a parallel listing, not a correction, so match whichever number sits on the part being replaced.

From 1988 through 1997, four wheel drive trucks used a press in tapered bearing set, not a cartridge hub. The front axle was either a Dana 28 or a Dana 35, depending on the truck. More on fitting one of these is on the press in page.

Two wheel drive is a separate part family

Not the connector parts above

A two wheel drive Ranger never used the round or square connector hubs above.

Instead it used a serviceable spindle bearing set. The part number changes only twice across the entire run, not by connector or build date.

From 1988 through 1994, the front spindle bearing set on a two wheel drive truck runs seal 6815. Inner bearing set is A-6 and outer set is A-2.

From 1995 through 2002 it changes to seal 9150S, with inner set A-5 and outer set A-2. The same number appears in parallel Timken and BCA listings as well.

Confirming which family applies is mostly about drivetrain, not year. What differs between the two front designs is on the front versus rear page.

The rear is an axle bearing

Every Ranger on this page carries a solid rear axle. The rear wheel bearing is not a hub. It rides inside the axle housing with the shaft passing through it.

Two ring gear sizes, two bearing families

National’s catalog covers the 7.5 inch and 8.8 inch ring gear rear axles with one shared number. That number holds through the 1990s and into the 2000s.

Timken’s catalog splits the same axles by ring gear size into two distinct number families. Seal 8660S covers the 7.5 inch axle and seal 8835S covers the 8.8 inch one. Both are genuine catalog readings, not a correction of each other.

A truck with the electric locking rear differential takes its own bearing and seal kit instead. What the axle bearing job actually involves is on the axle bearing page.

Why there is no 2012 to 2017 Ranger

No Ranger was sold new in the United States for model years 2012 through 2018. Ford ended the previous truck after 2011. It did not bring the nameplate back to North America until the 2019 model year.

So a search for a 2012 through 2018 Ranger wheel bearing has no domestic truck behind it. That gap sits with the vehicle, not with the catalogs. It is worth saying plainly rather than sending anyone to match an old part that was never sold here.

The 2019 Ranger is a different truck again, built on a global design new to this market. None of the four catalogs checked for this page list wheel bearings for it yet. Match the old part or the VIN.

Every model year this chart resolves: 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. A 2012 through 2018 Ranger was not sold in North America, and a 2019 Ranger is past the catalogs checked here, so it goes by the old part or the VIN.

The 1998 to 2002 rows are not one part, they are several

The four wheel drive front for these years keys off two things at once. One is how many wheels carry ABS. The other applies only to 2000, and depends on the hub lock design, pulse vacuum or its replacement.

Do not collapse these into one number or guess which a given truck has. Match the number on the old hub, or decode the option from the build sheet, before ordering.

Diagnosing a Ranger wheel bearing

  1. Confirm drivetrain first, since two wheel drive and four wheel drive trucks take entirely different front parts.
  2. Rock the wheel at twelve and six with it raised.
  3. Weave at road speed to see whether the noise follows load to one side.
  4. Rule out the tires, since aggressive tread roars in a way that is easy to mistake for a bearing.
  5. Compare hub temperatures after a drive across the front axle.

Those checks are on the checking page and the tire noise page. Pricing the job once it is confirmed is on the quote page.

Common questions

Which Ranger wheel bearing do I need?

On a 4×4 built from 2003 to 2011 it depends on the connector shape. Round takes 515052 and square takes 515129, and the 2009 trucks split partway through the year.

Is two wheel drive different?

Yes, completely. A two wheel drive Ranger used a serviceable spindle bearing set for the whole run, not the connector hubs above.

Is the rear the same job as the front?

No. The rear is an axle bearing in the housing, so the shaft has to come out. The number depends on ring gear size and whether the truck has the electric locking differential.

Why was there no 2012 to 2017 Ranger?

Ford stopped selling the previous truck in the United States after 2011. It did not bring the nameplate back until the 2019 model year. Owners searching those years almost always have the older truck or one sold outside the United States.

What about a 2019 Ranger?

It is a new body on a global design. None of the catalogs checked for this page list wheel bearings for it yet. Match the old part or the VIN until one does.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
