The short version

  • A Mustang wheel bearing can split by suspension package and engine, on top of the year, more than almost anything else on the road.
  • The catalogs used for this page document 1990 through 2017. Anything built before 1990 sits outside them and goes by the old part or the VIN.
  • The SVT Cobra ran an independent rear suspension from 1999 to 2004 and carries its own rear number, WE60413. Every other trim in that window kept the solid rear axle.
  • 2010 through 2014 rear is a real gap. No catalog checked for this page lists a rear number for those years.

An adaptive damper has nothing to do with a wheel bearing, at least not obviously. But the package changes the knuckle it bolts to, and that changes the part.

Reading a Mustang wheel bearing correctly from 1999 onward starts with the suspension package and the engine. On the rear, it also means knowing whether the car is a Cobra.

The suspension package split

Adaptive dampers change the front part

On the 2016 to 2017 5.2 liter cars, the magnetic damper package is cited with 513405 and cars without it with 513404.

Visually the hubs look interchangeable. They are not.

Check the build sheet or the window sticker if you have it. Confirm against the number on the old part either way.

The engine split

Displacement separates parts on the newer cars

The 2.3 liter and 3.7 liter cars are cited with 513346 at the front and 512517 at the rear.

The 5.2 liter GT350 takes different numbers at both ends, including 512588 at the rear, a number missing from this page until now.

Cross referencing between catalogs matters here, since the same generation carries different numbers depending on which one is in hand.

The rear axle before 2005

A different kind of part, and a different Cobra

From 1999 to 2004 the SVT Cobra ran an independent rear suspension, while every other trim kept a solid rear axle.

The Cobra’s own rear number, WE60413, does not carry across to the Base, GT or Mach 1 cars sold the same years.

A solid axle bearing sits in the housing rather than bolting to a knuckle. The catalogs list a seal, a bearing and a kit as separate items instead of one hub number. That split is explained on the axle bearing page.

For any Mustang built before 1990, the catalogs used for this page carry nothing at all. Those years go by the old part or the VIN.

Every model year this chart resolves: 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. A 1965 through 1989 Mustang predates every catalog this site holds and goes by the old part or the VIN.

The rear axle set is three numbers, not one

The pre 2005 rear axle bearing is not one part. The catalogs list a seal, a cylindrical bearing and a kit that bundles both. All three cover the same years and the same trims.

Order by what the job needs rather than assuming one covers the other. A worn bearing usually means the seal is due too.

What a driven car does to them

These get tracked, launched and driven hard, and side loading wears a bearing faster than mileage alone.

Autocross and track days load the outer bearing far beyond a commute. A car with that history should be checked more often than the mileage suggests.

Curb strikes and potholes do the same damage in a single moment instead of over years. That is on the pothole page and the failure page.

Diagnosing a Mustang wheel bearing

  1. Find out what package the car has before ordering anything.
  2. Coast in neutral at the noise speed, since these carry plenty of driveline noise of their own.
  3. Weave at road speed and note the loaded direction.
  4. Rock the wheel at twelve and six.
  5. Ask about track use, since it changes what is likely.

Those steps are on the checking page.

Common questions

Does the suspension package change the Mustang wheel bearing?

On the 5.2 liter cars yes. The adaptive damper package is cited with a different front part.

Does the SVT Cobra use a different rear part?

Yes. From 1999 to 2004 it ran an independent rear suspension and its own number, WE60413, while every other trim kept the solid axle.

What about a 2011 rear?

2010 through 2014 rear is not documented in any catalog checked for this page. Match it to the old part or the VIN.

Does this page cover a classic Mustang?

No. The catalogs used here start at 1990, and anything built earlier sits outside every catalog this site holds.

Do I need a press?

Not on the modern cars. They use bolt on hub units. The pre 2005 rear runs a separate seal and bearing, and the 1990 to 1993 front runs serviceable tapered sets that adjust rather than press.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
