Why boat trailer wheel bearings live a harder life
A hot hub holds warm air. Dunk it and that air cools within seconds, contracts, and drops the pressure inside the hub below the pressure outside.
The seal is designed to keep grease in, not to hold back a vacuum. Water gets drawn through it.
Once inside, water emulsifies with the grease. The result is the milky brown sludge that has no film strength and holds moisture against the races.

The launch habit that costs nothing
Park at the top of the ramp, rig the boat, sort the straps and the plug. Ten or fifteen minutes takes most of the heat out.
The smaller the temperature difference, the smaller the vacuum, and the less water gets pulled through.
This is the single most effective thing an owner can do, and it is free. It is also the step most people skip because the ramp is busy.
Bearing protectors, and what they actually do
A protector replaces the dust cap with a spring loaded piston that pushes on the grease behind it.
Because the inside of the hub stays slightly above outside pressure, there is no vacuum to pull water in.
They work, with two conditions. The hub has to be genuinely full, and the piston has to be able to move, which means checking it rather than trusting it.

Salt water changes the numbers
Fresh water rusts steel. Salt water does it faster and keeps working after the trailer is parked, because the salt stays behind when the water dries.
Rinsing the hubs and the axle after every salt launch matters more than the grease you chose. Rinse, then let it dry rather than parking it wet.

What to check at the ramp and after
- Touch each hub at every stop, comparing them rather than judging one.
- Look for grease slung onto the inside of the rim, which means a seal has gone.
- Rock each wheel at twelve and six before a long trip.
- Spin each wheel and listen for roughness with the trailer unloaded.
- Watch the protector, since a piston sitting fully out means the hub needs grease.
A hub noticeably hotter than the others is a bearing running dry or an adjustment that is too tight. Both end the same way.

Parts and sizing
Most boat trailer hubs use a tapered pair, a matching pair of races, a seal and a cotter pin. Buy them as a kit for the axle rather than piece by piece.
The numbers are stamped on the old bearings, and reading them beats measuring. Never reuse a race with a new bearing.
