The short version

  • A Liberty wheel bearing on the 2006 and 2007 front is side specific. That is unusual for a front hub, and 513176 is cited for the left, 513177 for the right.
  • 2002 to 2005 fronts split by ABS instead. 2008 to 2012 fronts drop both splits for one number, 513270.
  • The rear is a solid axle, not a hub. It takes an axle bearing and seal in the housing, covered separately below.
  • 2002 alone carries two different rear axle families. They are not interchangeable and must not be confused.

Handed parts usually turn up at the rear. Finding them at the front is rarer still. On a 2006 or 2007 Liberty, most people never think to check.

Left and right differ at the front

Only on the 2006 and 2007 cars

513176 is cited for the left front and 513177 for the right front on those two years.

Every other year in the range uses one number for both sides. Where it splits at all, it splits by ABS instead of by side.

If you are buying a pair for a 2006 or 2007, order one of each. Getting that wrong is an easy way to pay twice. Check the number against the quote page before you commit.

Lookups run through the cross reference page.

Every model year this chart resolves: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

2002 alone carries two different rear axles

A Dana Spicer 35 axle and a Chrysler 8.25 inch ring gear axle were both documented for 2002. They are different housings with different bearings and seals.

Match the axle in front of you, not just the model year. The two families are never interchangeable, whatever a listing that groups 2002 through 2007 together might suggest.

The rear is a solid axle, not a hub

A bearing and seal in the housing, not a bolt on unit

The Liberty rear never got a hub assembly in the catalogs checked. What ships instead is an axle bearing and a seal, serviced inside the axle housing.

Calling it a hub, or ordering a hub part for it, is the wrong job entirely.

The distinction between the two designs is on the axle bearing versus wheel bearing page.

Ordering parts for this end starts with the axle family, not the wear symptom. A rear noise on a Liberty is an axle question before it is a bearing question.

A heavy vehicle on a small footprint

Weight without much wheelbase

This is a body on frame design carrying real weight on a short wheelbase and a narrow track.

That concentrates load on fewer bearings than a larger truck spreads it across.

It shows up as front hubs that wear faster than owners expect for the mileage. Front and rear wear differently here too, which is on the front versus rear page.

What off road use adds

These get used as intended more often than most. Water is what kills a sealed bearing or a sealed axle alike.

A fording depth the vehicle handles easily is still deeper than most seals were designed for. Deep water followed by a long cool down draws moisture past the seal.

Lift kits and larger tires

Both are common here and both change what the hub and the axle carry. A taller tire is a longer lever, and more offset moves load further out.

Neither is a reason to avoid the modification. Both are a reason to check the front hubs and the rear axle more often afterward.

A shop doing the lift is a convenient time to inspect both ends, since the front end is already apart for the work.

Diagnosing a Liberty wheel bearing

  1. Note the side before ordering a front hub for a 2006 or 2007.
  2. Confirm the axle family before ordering a rear seal or bearing on a 2002.
  3. Ask about deep water, since it explains sudden failures at either end.
  4. Rock the wheel at twelve and six.
  5. Compare hub or axle heat across the axle in question after a drive.

Those checks are on the checking page and the tire noise page.

Common questions

Is the Liberty wheel bearing side specific?

At the front on 2006 and 2007 only. 513176 is the left and 513177 the right.

What if I ordered two of the same?

One will not fit. Order one of each for those two years.

What about a 2010?

513270 covers both front sides from 2008 onward. The rear is an axle bearing and seal, not a hub.

Does fording water hurt the rear axle too?

Yes. Axle seals are designed for splash, not submersion followed by cooling, the same as a hub seal.

Do I need a press?

No at the front. These are bolt on hub units. The rear is an axle bearing serviced in the housing, which is a different job entirely.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
