The short version
- On all wheel drive cars, a Passat wheel bearing uses the same number at both ends. That is unusual on this site.
- 513253 covers the front from 2006 to 2017 and the all wheel drive rear as well, on that newer body.
- The earlier 1998 to 2005 car did the same trick differently. 510019 and 510020 split by engine, at both ends, not by axle.
- Front wheel drive cars take 512319 at the rear instead, across the whole 2006 to 2017 range.
Most vehicles here need one number for the front and another for the rear. This Passat wheel bearing chart breaks that rule twice, in two different generations, in two different ways.
From 2003 to 2015, that pattern runs through the whole page. Get the engine and the drivetrain right and the rest falls into place.
One number, both ends, on the newer car
The front is cited as 513253 from 2006 through 2017. The all wheel drive rear carries the same number.
That means a shop can buy in pairs without tracking which end they are for, on that generation only. It also means a mixed order still works if both ends are worn.
The rear splits on drivetrain
512319 is cited for front wheel drive rears across 2006 to 2017. Look underneath for a driveshaft running back to a rear differential before ordering.
No driveshaft means front wheel drive, and 512319 is the number. A driveshaft running to a rear differential means all wheel drive, and 513253 is the number instead.

Cross referencing is on the cross reference page.
Every model year this chart resolves: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
510019 and 510020 both show up at the front and the rear of the 4motion car. The split follows the engine, not which end of the car it is bolted to.
Do not treat 510019 as a fixed front number or 510020 as a fixed rear number. Match the engine first, then confirm with the old part. Never conflate these older numbers with the later 513253.
The older car did this too, just differently
The 1998 to 2005 car presses 510019 or 510020 into the knuckle at both ends, chosen by engine. The 2006 and later car bolts a hub assembly on, and picks by drivetrain instead of engine.
Confusing the two generations is easy since both share a same-number-both-ends pattern. The number itself and the reason behind it are completely different. Treat them as two separate charts that happen to share a page.
The press-in job on the older car is covered on the press-in bearing page. The newer bolt on hub needs no press at all, which keeps labor lower on that generation.
The Audi connection and the CC
513253 is also cited for the Audi A3, which shares a platform family with the newer Passat. The Passat CC was sold as its own model for some years. It uses these same numbers outright, at both ends.
Search the number rather than the model name when a listing looks thin under either badge. The hardware does not know which name is on the trunk lid.
Getting a quote on either generation
A shop quoting this car without knowing which generation, drivetrain and engine it is looking at is guessing. Give all three before asking for a number, and expect a more accurate quote in return.
That habit is covered on the quote page, and it prevents the most common ordering mistake on this car.
If a bearing failed early on a car still under warranty, that is worth a call before paying. That question is covered on the warranty page.
Diagnosing a Passat wheel bearing
- Confirm the generation first, since 1998 to 2005 and 2006 to 2017 take entirely different numbers.
- Confirm the drivetrain before ordering a rear part.
- Confirm the engine on any 1998 to 2005 4motion car.
- Coast in neutral at the noise speed, then weave at road speed.
- Rule out the tires before buying a hub or a bearing.
Those steps are on the checking page and the tire noise page. Torque the axle nut to spec afterward, since that nut sets the preload on a fresh unit.

Common questions
Which Passat wheel bearing do I need?
Confirm the generation first. The 2006 to 2017 car runs 513253 front and, on all wheel drive cars, rear too. Front wheel drive cars take 512319 at the rear instead.
Is the same part really used at both ends?
On the newer all wheel drive car, yes, the catalogs cite 513253 for both. Confirm against your own part before ordering.
What about a 1998 to 2005 4motion car?
510019 and 510020 both appear at front and rear, split by engine. Match the engine, then confirm with the old part. Neither number is fixed to one end of the car.
Can I buy an Audi part?
513253 is cited for the A3 as well. Check the number rather than the badge.
Do I need a press?
Only on the 1998 to 2005 car. The 2006 and later car uses bolt on hub units at both ends, which lowers the labor considerably.
