The short version

  • First era GS300 wheel bearing work is serviceable up front: the 510017 ball with seal 1941, shared with the SC coupes.
  • That era’s rear is the pressed 511028, which the IS300 borrowed.
  • The 2006 onward cars flip to bolt-on hubs: handed fronts, 513284 left and 513285 right, over the 512337 rear.
  • One model, two completely different workshop eras.

The GS spans the entire shift in how Lexus built wheel ends. The 1998 car asks for grease and patience; the 2006 car asks which side of the car the noise is on.

Era one: grease and seals

1998 to 2005, serviceable school

The front GS300 wheel bearing is the 510017 with seal 1941, serving the GS400, GS430 and the SC300 and SC400 coupes alike.

The rear is the pressed 511028, the same bearing the IS300 runs.

Era two: pick a side

The handed fronts arrive in 2006

Like the IS that shares them, the later GS runs different front hubs left and right for the ABS encoder.

The wrong side bolts up and then corrupts the wheel speed signal. Order by the corner that hums.

The sedan sibling’s fuller handed-fronts story is on the IS page, and handedness in general on the left versus right page.

The coupes in the family photo

The SC300 and SC400 grand tourers share the first era’s parts completely, which triples the listings for what looks like rare hardware. The make overview is on the Lexus page.

Diagnosing a GS300 wheel bearing

  1. Name the era, 2005 or earlier against 2006 onward.
  2. On an early car, check the front grease before condemning.
  3. On a late car, name the side before ordering a front.
  4. Weave at speed and place the hum.
  5. Scan ABS codes on the later cars.

The routine is on the checking page, and the early-era service on the repacking page.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
