The short version

  • The Sonoma wheel bearing setup splits by drivetrain. 2WD fronts stay serviceable tapered bearings for the whole run, while 4WD fronts use bolt-on hubs.
  • 4WD hub numbers change three times: 513013 for 1991-1993, 513061 for 1994-1997, and 513124 for 1998-2004.
  • Unlike the Blazer and Jimmy SUVs on the same platform, the Sonoma pickup never picked up a sealed 2WD hub in 1998. Its front axle stayed serviceable to the end.
  • The rear axle uses a cylindrical bearing. The seal is chosen by axle code, not by model year.

GM sold three trucks off this platform in the 1990s, and they did not age the same way. The SUVs changed their front axle hardware mid run. The Sonoma pickup did not.

Sonoma wheel bearing numbers at a glance

513124 up front on 4WD trucks from 1998 to 2004

A Sonoma wheel bearing lookup starts with drivetrain. Two wheel drive trucks keep a serviceable tapered bearing pair up front. That covers the entire 1991-2003 span the catalogs list.

Four wheel drive trucks get a hub assembly instead. That hub number changed twice more before the truck’s final year.

The Sonoma and its SUV cousins, the S10 Blazer and GMC Jimmy, diverge in 1998. Those SUVs switched their 2WD front axle to a sealed hub, part SP450300, that year.

The Sonoma pickup never made that change. Every 2WD Sonoma front through 2003 stays a serviceable tapered set, SET6 inner and SET34 outer with seal 4739. Do not borrow a Blazer or Jimmy hub number for a 2WD Sonoma front.

Sonoma wheel bearing family: badge twins and shared axles

The Sonoma is a GMC badge on the same compact truck GM sold as the Chevrolet S10. Front and rear numbers line up year for year between the two.

The GMC Jimmy shares the same 4WD front hub numbers but not the 2WD front. The Jimmy took the sealed hub path in 1998 and the Sonoma pickup did not. Isuzu also sold a badge twin, the Hombre, and its 1998-2001 4WD front used the same 513124 hub.

The GMC lineup page covers the brand’s other trucks.

Work truck duty and the rear axle

A compact pickup spends more time loaded and towing than the SUVs built alongside it. That load runs straight through the rear axle. The rear bearing is cylindrical, not a tapered pair.

Its seal choice depends on axle code, not model year. That distinction between an axle-mounted bearing and a bolt-on hub is covered on the axle bearing page.

The 2WD front repack procedure, relevant to every early Sonoma, is on the repacking page.

Diagnosing a Sonoma wheel bearing

  1. Confirm 2WD or 4WD first. The whole job, parts and procedure, depends on it.
  2. Listen for a speed-linked hum. A worn Sonoma wheel bearing growls louder as road speed climbs.
  3. Rock the wheel at twelve and six. On a 2WD front, some play may mean the bearing needs adjustment rather than replacement.
  4. Check the axle code for rear work. Axle code K and axle code C use different seals on the rear.
  5. Rule out CV joint noise on 4WD trucks. A clicking or popping sound in turns often points elsewhere.

The full walkthrough is on the checking page.

Common questions

Did the Sonoma get a sealed front hub like the Jimmy?

No. The 2WD Sonoma front stayed a serviceable tapered set through 2003, even after the Jimmy and S10 Blazer switched to a sealed hub in 1998.

Which 4WD Sonoma wheel bearing hub do I need?

513013 for 1991-1993, 513061 for 1994-1997, and 513124 for 1998-2004.

Do S10 parts fit a Sonoma?

Yes. The S10 and Sonoma share the same axle hardware year for year on both drivetrains.

What rear seal does my Sonoma need?

That depends on axle code, not year. Axle code K, a Canada build, takes 8660S. Axle code C, a USA build, takes 710166.

Is the Isuzu Hombre the same truck?

For 1998-2001, its 4WD front hub used the same 513124 number as the Sonoma of those years.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
