Behind every rotor is a thin steel splash shield bolted to the knuckle. It is there to keep water and grit off the rotor face.

It is genuinely thin, and it sits very close to the rotor by design. A few millimeters is normal.

During a bearing job the hub comes out through it, the rotor comes off past it, and tools work all around it. Bending it is easy and hard to notice.

Why it makes such an alarming noise

Thin steel against a large rotating disc is efficient at producing sound. A contact you can barely see makes a noise you cannot ignore.

It does no harm to the brakes or the bearing. It is just loud.

Finding it in five minutes

  1. Raise that corner and support it properly on a stand.
  2. Spin the wheel by hand and listen. A shield rub is usually audible at walking speed.
  3. Look through the wheel at the gap between rotor and shield, all the way round.
  4. Slide a feeler or a business card around that gap. Where it will not pass, the shield is touching.
  5. Check for a bright rubbed line on the rotor face or the shield edge. That marks the contact point exactly.

The bright witness mark is the giveaway. Fresh steel on steel leaves an obvious shiny track.

Fixing it

Usually a screwdriver and gentle pressure, bending the shield back away from the rotor.

Work at the point that is touching and move it a small amount at a time. The aim is a consistent gap all the way round, not maximum clearance at one spot.

Do not simply remove the shield

It gets suggested a lot and it is a poor trade. The shield keeps water and grit off the rotor and away from the hub seal.

Removing it puts more contamination onto the part you have just paid to replace.

The other causes, in order

Brake hardware. A clip or shim disturbed while the caliper was off, now touching the rotor. Easy to spot with the wheel removed.

A pad sitting proud because the caliper was not seated fully, or a slide pin was not pushed home.

Debris trapped between the rotor and the hub face. A grain of rust left on the mating surface also makes the rotor run untrue.

The rotor not seated flat against a hub face that was not cleaned. This causes runout, which is a wobble rather than a steady scrape.

The hub face is the one people skip

Rust or scale between the hub flange and the rotor holds the rotor at a slight angle. It then wobbles against the pads.

Cleaning that face to bare metal takes two minutes during the job and prevents this entirely.

When it is not trivial

Two situations deserve more than a screwdriver and a bend.

A harsh grinding rather than a light scrape, especially with any roughness felt through the car. That needs the corner properly inspected.
