Staked Axle Nut: Removal, Reuse and Torque

The short version

  • A staked axle nut is single use. The stake is what stops it backing off, and it only works once.
  • Unstake it before turning it, with a punch, or you tear the axle threads apart.
  • Break it loose with the wheel on the ground, not with the car in the air.
  • Never use an impact wrench to tighten the new one. Shock through a bearing brinells the raceway.

The axle nut is the highest torque fastener you will meet on this repair, and on most modern cars it is a staked axle nut. That word changes how it comes off and whether you can reuse it.

Two mistakes here account for most of the trouble, and both happen in the first thirty seconds.

What a staked axle nut actually is

A thin collar hammered into a groove

The outer end of the nut has an unthreaded skirt, thinner than the rest. Once torqued, that skirt is deformed into a keyway machined in the axle.

The stake is the locking mechanism. It is not a torque feature and it is not decorative.

Because the locking comes from bending metal, it cannot be bent back and reused. The nut goes in the bin.

Unstaking, which comes first

Do not turn it while it is still staked

Turning a staked nut drags that deformed collar through the axle threads. It shreds both.

A stripped axle thread turns a bearing job into an axle replacement, and it takes about one second to cause.

Use a small pin punch or a narrow chisel. Work the staked collar out of the keyway until it is clear all the way round.

Then check by eye that nothing is still sitting in the groove before you put a socket on it.

The first row is the answer almost every time. Loosen it before jacking the car up, then finish by hand once the wheel is off.

Fitting the new one

Torque, then stake, in that order

Torque the new nut to the published figure with a calibrated wrench, including any angle stage the manufacturer specifies.

Only then deform the collar into the keyway. Staking first and torquing after gets the sequence backwards.

An impact wrench must not tighten this nut

Repeated hammer blows travel through the bearing while the assembly is unclamped, and each one can dent the raceways.

That damage is brinelling. It feels fine on the day and hums a few thousand miles later.

Working through it

  1. Order the new nut with the bearing, because you will not be reusing this one.
  2. Unstake fully with a punch before any turning force is applied.
  3. Crack it loose with the wheel still on the ground.
  4. Torque the new nut to spec, including any angle stage.
  5. Stake it last, into the keyway, and check it is properly seated.

Common questions

Can you reuse a staked axle nut?

No. The stake is the locking feature and it works by permanently deforming metal, so it cannot be relied on twice.

How do I unstake it?

Work the deformed collar out of the axle keyway with a small pin punch or narrow chisel until it turns freely.

What happens if I just turn it without unstaking?

The collar drags through the axle threads and destroys them, which can mean replacing the axle.

Can I use an impact gun on a staked axle nut?

To remove it, yes. To tighten it, never, because the shock brinells the bearing raceways.

Should I torque it in the air or on the ground?

Break it loose on the ground. Torque the new one with the wheel off the ground but before the car is lowered.

Do I stake it before or after torquing?

After. Torque to the full specification first, then deform the collar into the keyway.

What if my car has a different nut?

Many use a nylon insert or a crimped collar instead. Those are also single use for the same reason.
