ATV Wheel Bearings: What Actually Kills Them

What is actually in the hub

Sealed cartridges, usually in pairs

Each wheel usually runs two sealed ball bearings pressed into the hub or knuckle. A spacer sits between them, with a seal outboard.

They are ordinary catalog bearings. There is no adjustment and no repacking, and no way in without wrecking a seal.

Why ATV wheel bearings fail

The wash is worse than the ride

Riding through water gets the outside wet. A pressure washer drives water and grit through the seal lip under real force.

A seal is built to hold grease in against low pressure. It was never intended to resist a jet.

The second cause is the vacuum effect that troubles boat trailers. A hot hub plunged into a cold creek pulls water in as the trapped air contracts.

The greaser tool argument

Riders genuinely disagree, and both sides have a point

One camp reports opening new bearings and finding very little grease. A few pumps through a greaser tool is cheap insurance, they argue.

The other camp reports seals pushed out by the pressure, which turns a sealed bearing into an open one.

This is not settled, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Both camps do agree that pressure is the risk and that many pumps is a bad idea.

If you use one, keep it to a few pumps and turn the bearing as you go. Stop at the first resistance. Skipping the tool and replacing on condition is equally defensible.

Symptoms on a quad

When the same corner keeps failing

  1. Measure the housing bore, because a bore worn oversize will never hold a bearing.
  2. Check the axle for grooves and wear where the inner race sits.
  3. Look at the spacer between the two bearings, since a short or worn one lets the nut crush them.
  4. Fit square and by the outer race, never by hammering on the inner one.
  5. Torque the axle nut to spec, because overtightening loads the pair against a worn spacer.
Repeat failures are rarely the bearing brand

Owners often work through several brands on one corner before anyone measures the housing.

An oversize bore lets the outer race turn, which destroys any bearing you fit at any price.

Making them last

Keep the pressure washer away from the hubs. Let the machine cool before deep water, where you get the choice.

Then check for play at the start of each season rather than waiting for noise. Play on a quad often arrives before the growl.
