The short version
- A Legacy wheel bearing at the front on the 2015 to 2018 cars is cited as 513302. That is also the WRX STi number.
- Before that, 513220 covered the front for a full decade, 2005 to 2014, without changing.
- The mid 1990s cars are not all wheel drive throughout. A real front wheel drive trim existed, and its rear bearing carries its own numbers.
- The rear otherwise moves in clean generation steps: 512293, then 512401, then 512536. Older BCA and Timken numbers fill in the years before 2005.
Coverage of a Legacy wheel bearing on this page runs from 1995 through 2018. That span crosses five rear generations and three front ones.
Most of the Subaru pages on this site are about traps. This one is mostly about a surprise, and the surprise is what the front part turns out to be.
The part it shares
513302 is cited for the 2015 to 2018 Legacy front. The same number is cited for the WRX STi front.
A comfortable family sedan and a rally derived performance car ended up on the same hub.
That is useful when you shop. A listing aimed at STi owners is selling the identical part. Enthusiast listings are not always priced the same as family car listings.
Search both listing types before buying. The cheaper of the two is still the correct part.
The 2010 to 2014 cars also carry a second BCA number, WE60543. It is less certain, and it is not confirmed as interchangeable with the plain 2005 to 2014 listing. Treat it as a lead to check, not a second choice.
A decade on one number
513220 is cited for the front from 2005 through 2014, which is an unusually long unbroken run.
Fitment questions at the front are rare on those cars. Supply is good and prices stay competitive.
A ten year run without a change is unusual for this site. Most Subaru pages here describe at least one supersession inside a shorter window.
The same years carry two parallel catalog numbers for the identical position: HA590118 and WE60548. Match the number stamped on the old part rather than guessing between the three.

Every model year this chart resolves: 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Three separate catalogs independently document a front wheel drive Legacy trim through the 1990s. One shows a rear number split by ABS type in 1996. Another shows a plain rear number reaching back to 1990.
That trim is real, not a labeling error.
Do not assume every Legacy in that window is all wheel drive. Confirm the trim or the VIN first, rather than defaulting to the standard all wheel drive rear number.
The Subaru knuckle still applies
The hub sits in a bare metal knuckle bore at a tight tolerance, and water gets to it.
Corrosion then locks the two together, which is the hard part of every Subaru bearing job.
Clean the bore back to bare metal and measure it. Do not lubricate it, because the friction there is what stops the hub creeping.
The press in procedure covers the sequence in full. Budget extra time for a car that has never had the hub out before.
Not every Legacy was all wheel drive
A real front wheel drive trim existed on the Legacy through at least 1997 at the rear. At the front, through 2004, the part does not split by drivetrain at all.
A base trim from this era is not automatically an all wheel drive question. Check what the car actually sends power to before assuming a rear number.
The earliest cars, 1990 through 1997, are where this matters most. By 2000 the lineup had settled and the split becomes far less common in the listings.
Where a car does drive all four wheels, mismatched tread depths still make the system work constantly. That hum is easy to mistake for a failing bearing.
Measure all four tires before spending anything, on either drivetrain. That is on the tire noise page.
Diagnosing a Legacy wheel bearing
- Confirm the drivetrain on any car built before 2000, since front wheel drive trims exist.
- Measure tread depth on all four tires first.
- Coast in neutral at the noise speed.
- Weave at road speed and note the loaded direction.
- Rock each wheel at twelve and six.
Those are on the checking page.

Common questions
Which Legacy wheel bearing fits a 2016?
513302 is the commonly cited front number. Confirm against your own part.
Is that really the same as an STi part?
513302 is cited for both. Check the number rather than the vehicle in the listing title.
Was every 1990s Legacy all wheel drive?
No. A front wheel drive trim existed through the 1990s, and it uses its own rear numbers.
Why will the old hub not come out?
Corrosion in a tight bare metal bore. That is the Subaru pattern across the range.
Do I need a press?
On most of these yes, which is why the labor is not trivial.
