The short version

  • The Astro wheel bearing chart runs on two questions: drivetrain and era.
  • Late AWD vans have handed fronts, and the catalog disagrees with itself about which number is which side.
  • 2WD vans went from serviceable tapered fronts to the 515044 hub for 2003 to 2005.
  • The rear is a solid axle: 513023 bearings through 2002, 513067 for the last years.

GM built this van for a quarter century and changed the bearing answer roughly once a decade. The last-years AWD fronts are where it gets genuinely messy.

The handed AWD fronts, and the catalog argument

Three numbers, two sides, one disagreement

For 2003 to 2005 AWD vans the application listing gives left 515091 and right 515092, while the same catalog’s new-items index prints 515092 left and 515093 right.

All three numbers are real Astro and Safari hubs. Match your old part’s number rather than trusting either list blind, and buy by side regardless.

Handed hubs in general are covered on the left versus right page.

The 2WD fronts you can service

Through 2002, a two wheel drive Astro carries old-school tapered bearings behind a dust cap: clean, repack, adjust, drive. The procedure is on the repacking page, and it is work-van cheap.

The rear is axle territory

The solid rear axle carries its bearings on the shafts, 513023 then 513067, the latter shared with the TrailBlazer family. Axle bearing work is its own discipline, on the axle bearing page.

The make overview is on the Chevrolet page.

Diagnosing an Astro wheel bearing

  1. Establish 2WD or AWD, then the year band.
  2. On a late AWD van, match the old hub’s number and side, given the recorded conflict.
  3. On 2WD, adjust before condemning; slack tapered bearings often just need setting.
  4. A rear howl is the axle, not a hub.
  5. Search Safari listings too; the GMC twin is identical.

The routine is on the checking page.

Common questions

Which Astro wheel bearing fits my AWD front?

1990 to 1994: 515005. 1995 to 2002: 515019. 2003 to 2005: handed hubs, match your old part’s number and side.

Why do the listings disagree on the late AWD sides?

The catalog’s index and application pages conflict. We record it; your old part settles it.

Can I service the 2WD fronts?

Through 2002, yes, they are tapered and repackable. The 2003 onward 2WD vans take the 515044 hub.

What about the rear?

Solid axle bearings: 513023, then 513067 shared with the TrailBlazer family.

Is the GMC Safari the same?

Identical, year for year, both drivetrains.

Do I need a press?

Not for the hubs. The rear axle bearings, yes, or a shop.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
