The short version

  • A Suburban wheel bearing at the front splits by drivetrain. The rear is a different animal entirely.
  • 515096 covers four wheel drive and 515097 two wheel drive on the 2007 to 2013 trucks, the numbers most searches land on.
  • The rear axle is solid on every 1999 to 2008 truck. It takes an axle bearing and seal in the housing, not a hub.
  • The earliest trucks in this span, through 1999, used a serviceable front bearing set instead of a sealed cartridge.

General Motors built one full size platform in two lengths and sold it under four badges. A Suburban wheel bearing followed that platform, not the badge on the tailgate.

The front and the rear are not the same kind of part. The rear is a solid axle, and that changes what you order.

The drivetrain split

Two wheel drive and four wheel drive differ

515096 is cataloged for four wheel drive and 515097 for two wheel drive on 2007 to 2013 trucks. Earlier years carry their own numbers under the same split.

Look underneath for a front driveshaft and a transfer case before ordering a Suburban wheel bearing.

The split holds all the way back to 1995, though the numbers change more than once along the way.

Length does not change the hub

The same numbers as the short body

The Tahoe, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL and the Cadillac Escalade all draw on this same set of numbers.

A listing aimed at any of them is very often the identical part at a different price.

Checking a Tahoe or Yukon listing against this one is worth doing on the cross reference page.

Every model year this chart resolves: 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

The 1997 to 1999 four wheel drive diesel is a handed pair.

The left side uses WE61051 and the right side uses WE61562 in the parallel listings. These are different parts, not a leftover typo.

At the rear, do not shop for a hub assembly at all. The axle bearing and seal are listed by ring gear size. The wrong one will not seat in the housing.

The rear is a solid axle, not a hub

An axle bearing lives in the housing

Every 1999 to 2008 Suburban carries a solid rear axle, shared with the Silverado, Tahoe and Yukon. There is no rear hub assembly to bolt on.

The bearing and seal press into the axle housing instead. The number depends on which ring gear the truck carries.

The difference between the two designs is on the axle bearing versus wheel bearing page.

The older front, before the cartridge hub

1995 to 1999 uses a serviceable set, not a sealed unit

The front on these years takes a seal, a bearing and a cup as separate pieces. The set changes with the brake package fitted.

The four wheel drive trucks split further, by a six stud hub and, on the diesel, by side. Left and right take different numbers.

Confirm every piece before ordering. The general split between positions is on the front versus rear page.

What these actually carry

Weight is the biggest driver of wear

This is the largest passenger vehicle covered on the site. It is usually bought because the owner needs the space.

That means it spends its life near capacity. Towing adds more load again, through a hitch mounted behind the rear axle.

Those points are on the failure page.

Diagnosing a Suburban wheel bearing

  1. Confirm the drivetrain by looking for a transfer case before ordering a Suburban wheel bearing.
  2. Identify the axle at the rear rather than shopping for a hub that does not exist there.
  3. Search the Tahoe and Yukon listings too, since the front numbers match.
  4. Test it loaded as well as empty, since these trucks rarely run light.
  5. Compare hub heat across the front axle after towing.

Those steps are on the checking page and the tire noise page.

Common questions

Which Suburban wheel bearing do I need?

Check the drivetrain first. 515096 covers four wheel drive and 515097 two wheel drive on the 2007 to 2013 trucks.

Is the rear really different from the front?

Yes. The rear is a solid axle on every 1999 to 2008 truck, with a bearing and seal in the housing rather than a hub.

Does the long body use a different part?

No. The Tahoe of the same era shares these numbers at the front.

What changed before the cartridge hub arrived?

The 1995 to 1999 front used a serviceable bearing, seal and cup set instead of one sealed unit. The pieces changed with the brake package.

Do I need a press?

No for the cartridge hub years. The front is a bolt on unit, though expect corroded fasteners.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
