The short version

  • An Avalon wheel bearing at the rear is side specific, left and right, across both recent generations.
  • The front ran 510006 through 2004, then 510063, plus a wider parallel number, WE60691, that reaches 2018.
  • 512206 left and 512207 right cover 2005 to 2012. 512454 left and 512455 right take over from 2013.
  • The 2000 to 2004 rear also carries a current and an original catalog number, WE61811 and WE60731, with no ABS split at all.

Handed rear bearings catch people every time, because a pair looks like a pair on an invoice. Order two of one number here and one of them will not fit.

The 1998 to 2014 Avalon adds a second trap up front, where the number changed once and then split again by catalog. Neither trap is rare on this car, since both generations sold in real volume.

Left and right are different parts

Check the side before you order

512206 is cited for the left rear and 512207 for the right across 2005 to 2012.

On 2013 onward cars the pair becomes 512454 for the left and 512455 for the right.

Buying a pair means buying one of each. The Toyota Highlander and the Dodge Journey share the same arrangement, just not the same numbers.

A wheel that only hums on turns, one direction more than the other, usually points at one side. That narrows the order before it is placed.

The Lexus connection

512206 and 512207 are ES numbers too

The Lexus ES of the same era is cited with the same handed pair at the rear.

The two cars share a platform, so a listing under either badge is worth checking.

The Lexus overview is on the cross reference page, where the same number can be searched under either name.

That extra pool of listings tends to help on price more than on stock. A shared platform means more sellers competing for the same part.

The front changed once, then split by catalog

510006, then 510063, then a wider parallel number

The front Avalon wheel bearing ran under 510006 from 1995 through 2004, a single press in ball for that entire span.

510063 replaced it for 2005 to 2009. A separate catalog also prints WE60691 across 2005 to 2018, covering the same position further than the older number does.

That press in front is why a circlip and a proper press matter here. Both are covered on the press in page and the snap ring page.

For a 2010 to 2014 car, WE60691 is the only front number the catalogs print. The older 510063 line stopped at 2009, so a newer front job runs on the wider listing alone.

Every model year this chart resolves: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

The 2000 to 2004 rear prints two different systems

One catalog splits those years by ABS: 512310 for cars with it, 512311 without.

A second catalog prints an unqualified pair instead, WE61811 as the current number and WE60731 as the original listing, with no ABS distinction at all. Match the number the old part carries rather than mixing the two systems.

A quiet car that hides a slow wear

Long lives and second owners

This is one of Toyota’s most insulated sedans, and that cabin quiet is a poor match for a hub that is wearing slowly.

These cars also stay on the road a long time, so the second or third owner is often the one paying for the rear hubs.

Drive with the windows down if a bearing is suspected. On a car with plenty of life left, checking what any remaining coverage pays for is worth the call, on the warranty page.

The cheapest hub on a listing is a poor economy on a car built to run this long. Labor costs the same whichever part goes on, and a written quote settles what is actually included, on the quote page.

Most of what shortens any hub’s life here is impact rather than mileage. The failure mechanics behind that are on the failure page.

Diagnosing an Avalon wheel bearing

  1. Note which side before ordering anything at the rear.
  2. Drive with the windows down, since the cabin hides early noise.
  3. Weave at road speed and note which side the noise follows.
  4. Rock the wheel at twelve and six with it raised.
  5. Compare hub heat across the rear axle after a drive.

The full routine is on the checking page, and the sound comparison against tires is on the tire noise page.

Common questions

Is the Avalon wheel bearing side specific?

At the rear yes, in both recent generations. Order one left and one right for a pair.

What if I ordered two of the same rear number?

One will not fit. The left and right are different parts on this car.

Does the front use one number the whole time?

No. It changed in 2005, and a separate catalog prints a wider parallel number, WE60691, that reaches 2018 on its own.

Can I buy a Lexus ES part?

The 2005 to 2012 handed pair is cited for both cars. Match the number rather than the badge.

Do I need a press?

At the front yes, since it presses into the knuckle. The rear uses bolt on hub units.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
