  1. Turn the hub slowly by hand through several revolutions, feeling for consistency rather than lightness.
  2. Rock it top and bottom with both hands, looking for any perceptible movement.
  3. Check the flange sits flat with no gap anywhere against its mating face.
  4. Confirm the torque on the hub bolts and the axle nut with a wrench, not with a gun.

A correctly fitted sealed hub has no perceptible play at all. Any movement you can feel by hand means something is wrong.

Torquing the wheel

The last mechanical step, and it undoes good work more often than anything else.

Re-torque after fifty to a hundred miles. Fresh mating surfaces settle, and nuts that were correct can be loose afterward.

The first drive

Twenty minutes, then feel each hub

Drive gently, then stop and place a hand near each hub in turn, comparing across the axle.

Warm is normal. One hub clearly hotter than its opposite number is not, and it means the clamp or the fit is wrong.

Do it by comparison rather than by absolute temperature. The other side is your reference.

What to listen for, and for how long

A little settling noise that fades over the first week is normal. Anything that grows is not.
