The short version

  • A Honda Civic wheel bearing is two completely different jobs depending on which end of the car it is.
  • The front presses into the knuckle and typically needs a twenty ton press with the right adapter.
  • The rear is a bolt on hub assembly that comes off with a few bolts and no press at all.
  • 2006 and 2007 cars had a recall on a rear ABS sensor seal that could let water in and kill the bearing early.

Two Civic owners can be quoted wildly different numbers for what they both call a wheel bearing. Neither shop is wrong. The front and the rear are not the same repair.

Establishing which corner you have is the first useful thing to do.

Front and rear on a Honda Civic wheel bearing job

One presses, one bolts

The front bearing is pressed into the steering knuckle and the hub is pressed through the middle of it. The knuckle usually has to come off the car.

The rear is a complete hub and bearing assembly. Take off the drum or disc, undo the bolts, and it comes away.

They are not interchangeable and they do not cost the same. The procedures are on the press in page and the bearing or hub page.

The 2006 and 2007 recall worth knowing

A rear ABS sensor seal, not the bearing itself

A recall covered a rear wheel speed sensor O-ring on those years, where water could get past it and reach the bearing.

The bearing was collateral damage rather than the defect. If your car is from those years, check whether the work was ever done.

Check your own vehicle identification number against the current database rather than trusting any summary. What warranties cover is on the warranty page.

Every model year this chart resolves: 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. A 2019, 2020, 2021 or newer Civic sits past the catalogs and goes by the old part or the VIN.

Trim and even build country decide Civic numbers, not just year.

A 2006-2008 1.8L front splits by where the car was built: Japan built cars take ball 510073 and USA built cars take assembly 510089. Check the VIN’s first character, J for Japan and 1 or 2 for North America, before ordering.

The 2013-2015 LX rear carries parallel listings, 512503 and 512504, in different catalogs. Match the number on the old part rather than choosing between them.

Price links lead to Amazon searches for that number. As an Amazon Associate this site earns from qualifying purchases.

Read the 2012 rows. That year splits by trim and by where the car was built, so the model year alone will not order the right part.

Always confirm against the number on the old part. That is on the cross reference page.

Fitting direction on the front

The encoder face goes inward

Many of these bearings carry a magnetic encoder ring on one face, usually darker in color, which the wheel speed sensor reads.

Press it in backwards and the ABS light comes on immediately, with a bearing that is otherwise perfectly good.

Correcting it means pressing the bearing back out. That is on the orientation page and the light after replacement page.

Honda Civic wheel bearing costs and the press question

The bearing itself is inexpensive. What sets the front bill is the labor to strip the corner and the press work afterwards.

Buying a complete knuckle with the bearing already fitted removes the press step, at a higher parts price.

Those trade offs are on the press service page, the no press page and the DIY or shop page.

Common questions

Why is the front dearer than the rear?

The front presses into the knuckle and the rear bolts on. The parts cost similar and the labor does not.

Do I need a press for a Honda Civic wheel bearing?

For the front, yes, or a shop that will do the pressing. The rear needs no press at all.

What was the 2006 and 2007 recall about?

A rear ABS sensor O-ring that could let water past and damage the bearing. The bearing was the consequence, not the defect.

Why do listings show several rear parts for my year?

Because rear hubs split by trim and by build location, particularly on 2012 cars. Match the number on the old part.

Why did the ABS light come on after the job?

Usually the front bearing went in backwards. The magnetic encoder face has to point inward toward the sensor.

Can I avoid the press?

Buy a complete knuckle with the bearing already fitted. You pay more for the part and skip the hardest step.

Is the whole hub replaced at the rear?

Yes. The rear is a sealed unit including the hub, so it is replaced complete.

About this page

Wheel Bearing Editorial Team The Wheel Bearing Editorial Team researches, builds and edits wheelbearing.net. Every part number on the site is transcribed from manufacturer and distributor catalogs (Moog, Timken, SKF, National, BCA/NTN) rather than generated, and every vehicle page is checked against the catalog rows before it goes live. When two catalogs disagree, the page shows both readings and tells you to match the old part or the VIN. More about how this site is built.
